I'm currently running a homebrew campaing where the party are at 5th level by now and they are close to achieve the milestone to level up to 6th. I always try to keep an intresting point on the actual threats they face by level that justify some of their development as adventurers, so they're not just random guys that have killed something and suddenly a burst of litgh surrounds them and their HP rises.
The thing here is: I have a Grave Domain Cleric in the party that will have access to Sentinel at Death's Door as soon as he level up. Since the chenge in his life is that they will be able to cancel critical hit effects after that, I'm planning to make him face a ton of creatures that can create intresting effects when it roll a crit, so it will be something that matters to him in lore matters and not just mechanically. Of course I still must roll that 20, but I think if the party faces lots of them it will happen soon or latter, so I must chose something with a low CR to make those encounters with groups of them.
There is some good soul here in this forum that can suggest me some creature that matches with what I need or may know some list of creatures where I can filter by "crit hit effects" or so? Fiends and undeads are preferable but anything helps really.
Additional Monsters and NPC that generate additional effects on a critical hit include Orc Red Fang of Shargaas (VGtM) Langdedrosa Cyanwrath (HoTDQ), Chocker (ToA) Curse of Fortune (TftYP), Leucrotta (TOA), Gald (PoA), Rak Tulkesh (ERoTLW)
And would be nice if I could make it right know but I need to save time. I was looking for some already set on official sources so I can focus in other matters. In last case I will homebrew some, but the time on design and make sure its balanced would be a burden for me right now.
I think some of the sugestions from Plaguescarred helped me a lot, I'll probably take one of those as a stretch for something that fits to my plannings.
I mean, my intentions is just to put these situations to make that link with him gaining that feature next level, but I also don't want to make it something big to the campaing itself, so I'll save time for other matters you know
The examples I could think of are already covered, so here's one from one of my homebrews. I have a magic great club called the Branch of Ages, made from a petrified ancient tree branch. Crits with it turn one of the target's limbs to stone for a minute.
Especially with fiends and undead, I'm sure you could come up with a reason one of your monsters has such an effect.
Monsters that generate additional effects on a critical hit include the Balor, Githyanki Knight, the Assassin etc.
That other thread about "poison on crits"...
Well, it was a one-shot instakill from an assassins crit. The grave cleric didn't saw the blow becouse it was unconcious, however it was a traumatic loss of a great friend and now it is a great narrative explanation on how it got Sentinel at Death's Door next level.

Thanks!
Balor is too much for them. But Gyth and Assassin may work if I didn't put them in hordes.

You’re the DM. Every monster can generate a special effect on a critical hit if you want it to.

Yeah sure!

That's a nice one and for sure I can make up a reason for that in that scenario. Thank you!
Also while not a creature, in Tales from the Yawning Portal is a Curse of Fortune you can attribute to monsters of your choice:
Curse of Fortune. High d20 results matter more in this area:
- A creature that scores a critical hit can roll the extra
damage die twice instead of just once.
