I'm considering playing a fairy or other race that can fly: How do I make that as much fun as possible?
And I mean fun (or funny) for everyone, not just fun for me?
What ability, feats, spells, etc. might pair well with flying? What strategies and tactics should I think about, being able to move in 3 dimensions instead of just 2? And how can that be fun and also advantageous?
What possible quirks related to flight might make it more fun?
What do I need to be leery of that might make it not fun?
Flight is very overpowered already. Not a lot of feats etc designed to boost it.
You are stuck to no more than Light armor, keep that in mind. Think Mages, Monks, Rogues, and Barbarians. Ignore the sub classses that let you do more armor than normal for the class.
As a fairy, anything that affects your walking speed ALSO changes your flying speed. Higher flying speed can be very important. Consider feats like Mobile.
Now this will depend heavily on the DM (allowing damage if you fall on someone), but a fairy druid has plenty of good angles to use supportive/battle field control magic from the sky. Since you wanted to lean into the fun/funny route, imagine flying up over top of an enemy and wild shaping into a bear/whale/crocodile/etc. You could literally make it rain cats or dogs.
I think it might be amusing to use a non-flying familiar, like maybe a cat, to deliver your touch spells. You could use spells like Sanctuary, Invisibility, and Mage Armor to make your little friend harder to kill. It wouldn't be *good,* it would just be neat.
Flying behind enemies and using something like Dissonant Whispers to force them to run towards your allies might be useful.
It probably won't work with fairy, but if you're a medium sized creature, you can act as a mount for any small creatures in your party. Get them to take the mounted combatant feat.
As a fairy Druid, you could have fun basically being a mad nature bomber. Toss Magic Stones from above. Create Water to drench people. Create Bonfire or Produce Flames can be little incendiaries. Spin around to make Dust Devils. Drop glitter bombs for Faerie Fire. Etc.
Dreams or Wildfire seemed most appropriate for subclasses, but just about any of them would do except Spores.
Fun and effective might be a druid with thorn whip. Fly straight above the enemy, pull them 10 feet up and drop them for extra damage and they land up prone.
