We are currently running the Tyranny of Dragons and are coming back from holiday break. The party is made up from a barbarian, cleric and a Sorlock. I was playing an artificer but came up with the idea of leaving the party on a cliffhanger just before we broke up. Which involved my character being taken by the black dragon (and tortured then killed). So I have to come back as a new character but i cant decide what to play.
What kind subclasses are the others playing? What did you like about your Artificer and what would you like to be different? What aspects of D&D do you like in general and what would you like to explore more?
I played a game where I was a Zealot Barbarian and the other players were a Scout Rogue, an Undying Warlock, and a Grave Cleric. Everyone else was ranged and I know I would have had some fun with a second melee character (thre rogue sometimes mixed it up in melee, which was fun for me. That could be an angle for you to consider. Likewise, a rogue or bard could give you some skill monkey flavor to balance the party that way, or a wizard or a different subclass Artificer could fill the lack of intelligence.
Going with a Battle Smith Artificer, a Necromancy Wizard, or Shepherd Druid could let you stay ranged while providing some melee companions for your barbarian.
Here are some of my favorites without duplicating your companions classes or your previous character's class. Maybe one will trigger an idea that really speaks to you.
A Creation Bard can create components with spell L2 spell slots. By the time you need a big diamond for a spell, you'll probably be high enough level to just create it yourself.
An Eloquence Bard is the master of Persuasion and Deception, especially fun if you're a Changeling, or if you take the Mask of Many Faces from either a feat or a 2-level warlock dip.
A Moon Druid can tank pretty well, and can heal as well as cast battlefield control spells.
An Echo Knight Fighter can teleport around, and attack from places up to 30ft away from where the Fighter is actually standing.
An Eldritch Knight Fighter can cast some spells to self-buff.
A Shadow Monk with the Urchin background would make a really good Rogue facsimile, being able to teleport through shadows and having a high movement speed, and proficiency in Thieves' Tools. No sneak attack though.
One level of Hexblade with the rest being Paladin turns Charisma into your "god-stat", used for your attack and damage rolls, and is added to all of your saves when you reach your 6th Paladin level.
The Drakewarden Ranger has a Drake as an animal companion, but the best part is that on top of it being pretty good, if it is killed, you can summon it back at full health with a Level 1 slot (you can also summon it as an action 1/Long Rest for free, without expending a spell slot), and its stats level up with you. It's like a combat familiar that doesn't take any material components.
The Swashbuckler Rogue is one of my favorite classes, especially if you combine it with a race that lets you know the cantrip Booming Blade (High Elf, Half-Elf Variant from the Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide, Variant Human, etc). That's a potent combination.
The Abjuration Wizard is spectacular at Counterspell and Dispel Magic (and is even better if you take an option that lets you refresh your temporary hit point buffer for free, like the Svirfneblin Magic feat or the Armor of Shadows which you can get from a feat.
The Divination Wizard's Portent is amazing.
The Chronurgy Wizard's re-rolls are great as well.
Your party seems like it needs a rogue, melee control or striker, or an arcane caster (perhaps in that order).
FayetteGamer has several good suggestions. I’ll add Arcane Trickster as a rogue that can bring a bit of arcane magic to add to your Sorlock. With a high DEX and decent INT, you’ll fill in the holes in stats and skills for your party. With some defensive illusion magic like Blur or Mirror Image with a high DEX, you can sneak attack your barbarian’s foes from melee of you choose.
Most of the party has used Int as a dump stat, so im thinking of taking 1 level in Artificer and rest in wizard. This will give me thieves tools and access to a full arcane caster.

That's a strong combination, and it also gives you access to Faerie Fire and some L1 healing spells that the wizard doesn't normally have access to, if you want them. And when you pick your race, don't forget to consider the newer options that let you put the ability-score-increases wherever you want them. If allowed, a Fairy gives a racial fly speed, or the Reborn allows you to long rest in four hours without ever sleeping, or even needing to Trance like an Elf

Reborn could actually be the previous character brought back to life, complete with some retention of the Artificer skills. The remains of a wizard were also used and the preference for wizard overpowers the desire to "struggle" through relearning Artificer as the difficulties involved were very much retained in memory.
