I am a newer player to DnD and my groups is going to run Curse of Strahd. My friend recommended I play a Sun Soul Monk but I have heard it to be somewhat lacking.
I have created a Protector Aasimar Sun Soul Monk with a Criminal/Spy background.
Any thoughts on this build or other builds that would be beneficial for Curse of Strahd.
Sun Soul Monk is particularly useful in Strahd because it can output radiant damage all day long, and there's a lot of stuff in that adventure that's weak to radiant. Honestly it's probably the adventure where Sun Soul is the most useful, since it's a fairly average monk subclass in most settings.

I agree. Having a ready, unlimited source of radiant energy is extremely useful.
And while the Protector Aasimar's flight is situationally useful, a player might find the Scourge (or the MMotM variant) more useful for the AoE radiant damage.

Flight pairs particularly well with Sun Soul, though, because the Radiant Sun Bolt feature can be used to attack from range. Against any melee-focused enemy in an open area, the monk can just start flying and rain down sun bolts safely out of range.

That is true. It is more defensive, whereas the AoE of the Scourge Aasimar is more offense. I offered that just as another angle to consider.
