For lore reasons, my Artificer (Alchemist)/Rogue that i'm currently playing is about to get a total class swap into wizard. With the loss of HP and Armor proficiency, and the fact that this is a high mortality campaign (4 character deaths at level 9!), i want to start planning a backup character I know i'll get to do a lot with. I really enjoy how busy my character sheet was with the previous class combo, i had tons to keep track of and a solution for anything in or out of combat.
I feel like i can't bring another artificer to the table, or at least, if i do, it should be one with a very different build and focus than the Alchemist. So, what are some builds (with no limit on multiclassing if you wanna get wild lol), that would give me a lot to keep track of and a lot to do mechanically both in and out of combat? I'm cool with focussing on healing or damage or battlefield control, i just want my trinkets (overcomplicated mechanical minutiae) :D
A utility character build I really like is L1 Rogue, L2-5 Eloquence Bard, L6+ Swashbuckler Rogue. Between your Expertises and Jack of All Trades, you're good at everything, and great at your specialties, and very early on, your die rolls for Persuasion and Deception count all die rolls less than 10 as 10, making you a perfect Face, especially if you put two of your Expertises in those skills. Booming Blade pairs well, since you can move up attack for Booming Blade and Sneak Attack damage, then move away without provoking attacks of opportunity, and if your opponent moves on his turn, he'll take additional Thunder Damage. Astral Elf is a great race for this character, with your additional skill proficiencies, one of which you can change daily. Alternatively, a Changeling would be the perfect infiltrator with this, especially if you can get Shiftweave clothing to be able to completely change your outfits and your face in a moment, with neither being an illusion, so there's no chance of anyone seeing through it.

This actually works really well with a backstory i was thinking of. I've never been a face before, so this build could be a super cool new thing to try for me, thanks!
Hey I saw this thread while looking at cool character ideas and thought to have some input.(Sorry in advance I have trouble with English and forget a lot of commas)
So this is the idea, it has 6lv Shadow monk and 5lv rouge subclass doesn't matter wood elf race. This is what you want to do, use Tasha's monk weapon feature and pick a longsword and use it as a versatile weapon so you get 2d10 +1d6 damage for your attacks. You also need to pick up the mobile feat so you'll have 70 foot movement and get a +2 dex, your stats should look like this 10str 18dex 13con 8int 16wis 12cha
You get as a shadow monk you can cast darkness with 2ki points you can use this feature to teleport with it's 6lv ability shadow step witch also gets advantage on next attack roll so you get rouge sneak attack from there, you can go lots of different directions with your character just do something that's fun. (Sorry Im kinda a min/maxer, and I heard high mortality so I thought can't kill me if I kill it first. If you don't like it that's fine besides DND is about having fun)(you could play an aasimar and one of your old classes saying that your character had unfinished business that had to accomplished until he could truly die)

Dude, this is SUCH a cool build. Do not worry about the min-maxness of it, I have the same problem sometimes lol. I really like the vibes of this build, there’s so much I could do with the backstory of someone like this. Thank you!
For this Shadow Monk/Rogue Multiclass, since you said the Rogue subclass isn't as important, I think one really interesting synergy you can make is to take the Scout subclass of Rogue. They have a unique reaction when an enemy ends their turn within 5 feet of the Rogue, where they can then move half their speed without triggering an attack of opportunity. When you've got a movement speed of 70, you can still move completely out of melee range if you really want. You're basically impossible to pin down.
Other subclass options could be Phantom, which feels like it meshes thematically well with Shadow Monk and also gives you more utility by basically giving you a floating proficiency you can change during rests to tackle different problems. There's also a damage boost, but it's one of those features that works best if you're more Rogue than anything else.
The other more utility-based subclass would be Soulknife. The Psychic Blades are nice as a safety net so that you've always got some form of weapon you can manifest, but is largely redundant thanks to your monk features being better at outputting damage. But most importantly, it gives you access to a mostly free form of group psychic communication, and allows you to spend your Psionic Energy Dice into a kind of self-inspiration, making it very hard for you to fail skill checks. The coolest part is, if you use a Psionic Die to try to turn a failure into a pass and it still fails, then you get to keep the Die to use on a future skill check. Very useful for a utility character who might have to make a clutch Thieve's Tools check, or really needs to nail a persuasion check.
Hey just a reply to my previous thing one of the best races to use with this build is a bugbear. There get a +1 to dex which helps monks and rouges as well as the fact you get 10foot range with an extra 2d6 if you surprise a creature.

Hell, take the version of Bugbears from "Monsters of the Multiverse" and you don't even need to surprise enemies... as long as you go before them in the first round of combat you get that extra damage on every single attack.

We had a character in our last game who was a Psi Warrior Fighter and a Soul Knife Rogue. Talk about busy!
