I designed a Rogue/Fighter multi-class character but I'm also tempted to go solely Fighter for a new experience. I did some looking into subclass combination and while I went with Scout/Champion at the moment, apparently Scout is only best with ranged characters and Champion is underwhelming. Granted, I'm mainly playing for fun but also curious to see what others believe fit the theme more.
"One year ago, Tessandra "Tess" Kane was the sole survivor of a mass murder during a winter escapade at a ski lodge. A simple trip with friends and classmates turned into a night of terror and perseverance to live. She vividly remembered that evening - the screams, the bloodshed, the tears, the sheer exhaustion from surviving until dawn, as help couldn't reach the resort in the abrasive storm.
Tess spent sleepless nights riding herself of the trauma - the memories of staring down her would-be killer, wounded, and armed with a kitchen knife, prepared to fight to her last breath. Who stood before her was a gangly individual with a bloody fox mask and a sickle. While she thought she had slain her assailant, the body was gone upon the authorities' arrival.
Tess resorted to sleeping pills in order to make it to morning, but that only remedied the pain. The nightmares would still come and go, making adjustments to her reality a struggle.
The next evening, a news broadcast announced the discovery of a woman's corpse in a nearby parking garage, with security footage revealing an individual in a fox mask.
Class/Subclasses that jump to mind at the theme are: Phantom Rogue, Beserker Barbarian, Gloomstalker Ranger (possibly also Hunter Ranger if you want a more magic-less feel), Way of Death Monk, Death Cleric, Vengeance Paladin (you can do a dex-based paladin if you're willing to give up the option of multiclassing, and it's really fun)
Also an idea is the Spirits Bard or Ancestral Guardian Barbarian, if you wanted to go via a route of having your character have some sort of physical (magical) connection to the other victims of the killer.

I know what you're thinking: "In that flurry of blows, did he use all his ki points, or save one?" Well, are ya feeling lucky, punk?
Well, since that kind of horror genre protagonist can't be too strong, I would intentionally choose one of the subclasses that does not optimize well. Something like...Alchemist Artiifcer. Add on Tavern Brawler to simulate the "using whatever is on hand to survive" trope of in horror movies. Or go with Transmuter Wizard+Tavern Brawler, choosing only utility and debuff spells. No direct damage. Use arcanum to slow opponents down/knock prone, then kill them with a knife or bowling ball.

Tess was paralyzed with horror.
The nightmare had resumed."

Oooh, Ancestral Guardian could be pretty neat if you want to go the whole "calling on all the people the fox murdered to wreak vengeance upon them".
