I am looking to make a Clockwork game where the adventurers are hired to go repair malfunctioning Clockworks. I'm looking for suggestions on which clockworks would work best for this idea and if there are any classes other than Artificer that would work well in this setting. My thanks for any assistance received.
It seems like anyone with proficiency in tinker’s tools should be able to. And most anyone can get a tool proficiency one way or another.
Not a class, but I’d think rock gnomes would be a good fit. Autognomes would also just make sense, though they don’t have any specific abilities like rock gnomes do.

You need to many any/all classes viable for the adventure, so why not super-size the clockwork so the adventurers have to go inside the giant clockwork machine and thus have all kinds of different challenges to overcome in a diverse number of ways:
jumping from one moving gear to another
pulling out things jamming the gears
killing monsters infesting the clockwork
applying oil to high up or difficult to reach portions
washing off acid or grime on portions of the mechanism
pulling / pushing gears back into alignment with each other
reattaching broken levers
etc..etc...
