I’m currently playing a level 7 Bugbear Horizon Walker dex-based Ranger that uses a rapier and shield with the duelist fighting style. I’m having a lot of fun with it!
What’s the generally preferable use of my bonus action? I always seem to waffle between using it for Planar Warrior and Hunter’s Mark. Which option is usually considered better? Both are super handy, but I only get one bonus action per turn
Hunter’s Mark only needs to use your Bonus Action to cast or be assigned to a new target. If you expect to spend several rounds hitting one target, then I’d recommend first using HM since it should stack on subsequent turns with Planar Warrior. If you’re fighting a mob and expect to be regularly downing enemies, then it’s a question of which you think is giving you better damage. Keep in mind that HM will proc on each hit, not just once per turn.
Thanks! That helps a lot. Yeah, it’s a bummer that Planar Warrior’s only once per turn. Seems like it only really makes sense to use it when whatever I’m fighting is resistant to piercing
No, it makes sense to use it whenever you're not doing something else with your Bonus Action- as I said, Hunter's Mark doesn't constantly occupy your BA unless you're consistently shift targets. Lock onto the biggest thing in the fight, mark them, and then use Planar Warrior on the next few turns to really stack the damage.
That is why hunters mark is so poorly made. It should not be a bonus action to switch targets if the target is killed then it should be part of the attack action to mark a new target.
Instead of HM, knowing that you are going into battle, I usually per buff with Haste (if a party member doesn’t have it). So that leaves planar warrior open rd 1 . Since haste lasts 1 minute should last the whole combat (unless you lose concentration). Also at higher level you can hit multiple targets (teleport 10ft) and get 3 attack, with haste that’s 4 attacks a round , so better out come on average than HM.
Then 4th spell conjure barrage is worth it when you have lots of mobs.
Zephyr spell is good too because you can move and not provoke opportunity attacks and a bonus damage on an attack (also concentration) but great usage.
not sure 2014 or 2024 version of DnD you are currently playing.
