Well it sucks but it can be build to work even though i do think that the ultimate fix would be to let their abilities either activate pbtpd or every time you second wind but until that i will play it RAW because i like the rp of it and fighter is general my favourite class because of all the feats that can really customize you. Now i have only played it in high level games 20lvl and 12lvl but i do think i made it work. Consider what you want to add to it, do you want damage or support.
Damage go stuff like goliath and other feats that add damage, just completely optimize there maybe even strike of the giant feat from bigbys giant book and ofc great weapon master and by 6th level you have something to do on top of your once per round second wind and when you get your 7th level ability.
Support like i always choose i use dragonlance feats squire of solamnia d8 pbtpd extra damage and the i go for the knight of the crown as my second feat and hope we have a rogue in the party. By the time i get to use indomitable for my party members i am a super supporter i also choose things like faerie magic feat to destroy targets saving throws maybe purple rook, with all these feats and all the time supporting i matter so much to my party. In my lvl 20 adventure i completely saved the party so much with them succeeding on savingthrows that they always wanted to be within range.
Now damage wise i think all fighters can only make it with the right magic weapons and there talk to your dm if you dont get to choose yourself if you start on a higher level but i always try to get my hands on vicious or dragon wrath now which might not make me deal as much damage as the other but remember when i action surge my comrades get 4 with my 18 chattacks which can quicly be anywhere between 50 and 200 damage.
Hoped they fix it a little but will still play it what do you think how would you optimize it?
I’ve tweaked my banneret players healing ability to scale a little better. It gives fighter level + proficiency bonus hp, and any healing over max turns to temp hp to 3 targets within 30ft. It also recovers on a short rest. So at level 5 they can throw out 8hp to 3 people. Not game breaking by any means, but far more useful and usable more often.
