Imagine: You get recruited by a someone with COMPLETE information about the upcoming adventure. Spies, possibly including him/her/it, have had the location under surveillance for some time. They may meet you at some point on the way.
This does mean all the players would have to read the module before you begin the adventure, except possibly the roleplaying parts. You can provide a description of the module as detailed as you want--approximate NPC list, a detailed map drawn by the spies, descriptions of known traps, treasure, etc.
You can make changes reflecting differences in time. Maybe the spies were another adventuring party that got repulsed, or they were detected in some other way. Maybe your employer needs to defend the location from a known attacker, and you were observed being recruited (like arriving in a village under seige or just under surveillance by a flunky). Because of this, the opposing forces may have made changes, like hiring mercenaries who ill be paid partially with some of you as slaves and with some of your magic items.
for surveillance. 10% XP (maybe of MUCH tougher opponents, as primary mission)
for planning, 5% XP, does not stack if players agree
Once, our DM had the wizard who hired us give us a published map with the complete layout and nothing else except that there was a magic gem there we needed to retrieve. He said his divinations revealed the layout. He enhanced the believability by having the wizard say "I would go with you, but..." and floating out from behind his desk to reveal that his legs had been amputated. I asked if his divinations had revealed anything else. The DM replied, as the wizard that they had not revealed any more, but he looked uncomfortable, meaning he was not completely prepared for the question. Believability lessened, although it was important to him and us. (This post is partially inspired by that event.) The above solution would have made that easier to ad-lib.
Another time, we (another group) were playing a different adventure--a published module. When the DM asked if anyone had read the module, I said "I have, but my character hasn't." He grinned and allowed me to play. I don't think I gave anything away without appropriate gameplay like "I'm going to walk over here and see what happens." But I could have taken the DM aside and offered to serve as a guide, maybe as part of a party that had been repulsed, as an employer who would go along with them, etc. The important thing is I would have been able to reveal what I knew, as if I had at least observed all of it. There was nothing there in the dungeon itself except one trap that would have altered the game by revealing it ahead of time. (The DM could have had that trap be different when we went down there that time.)

It should help. Also, I DM with my family... And they have never played before. So I have a character, who I roleplay, but so that they don't do everything. I ask the players, then my character follows them, or they do something appropriate to the character.

However, I was thinking of running a published module, like one of the free ones on this site. It's easier sometimes. Some players would be sneaky and read it even if I ask them not to.
Anyway, as a strategist player, I know I enjoy planning my character's actions as much as possible, with a dozen or more contingency plans as needed. I hope to attract other strategist players to game with.
