I have been playing D&D for a while now and I have come across unusual rules for certain one-shots, such as no humans, no sorcerers; that kind of thing. I was invited to a one-shot recently and the DM had informed at the possibility for feats to be used at LVL 1. Normally, this sounds like a power-character one-shot. However, it did get me thinking about future games that I would DM.
I am thinking of a limited list, though, for the LVL 1 characters.
1) Do you think this is a wise decision; to give LVL 1 characters a feat upon creation?
2) If you would limit the choices of SRD Feats, what would be your choices?
I don't see a problem with level 1 feats. They can be a little power gamey, or add variety to the characters makinh them more unique. I advise banning human variant when using this rule.
If I were limited to SRD feats, I would pick the grappler feat. Not only is it the best feat in the SRD, but it is the only feat in the SRD.
In my campaigns, I have characters use the standard array or point buy, and then choose a free feat at first level. This doesn't seem to have broken the game, and I find that free feat lets players refine their concepts and differentiate their characters somewhat.
I do exclude feats that let a player cast spells of higher than first level (which I think just excludes Drow High Magic and Wood Elf Magic).
