Currently I'm playing my first 5e character, and being the type of person that I am I had to multi-class, twice. Long story short I wanted a lot of flavor, now I'm curious if it is actually as viable as it seems on paper, or if I'm missing something important. I don't really know what kind of outputs are expected from a lvl 20 characteer so any thoughts or ideas would be much appreciated.
@ lvl 20. Tempest cleric 8/ storm sorcerer 7/ pact of the blade hexblade warlock 5.
--Damage total--(43-140 damage), 30ft knockback @ cost of 20 movement, 1/2 warlock slot used

5 languages

I'm newer here than i am to D&D so go easy on me. what am i forgeting about? what doesn't work like I'm thinking? what can I add? whats un-necesary? any help is appreciated!
Seems to work but only really effective against a single target. If multiple targets are involved, there are far more effective ways to use your turn, your CD and your 8th level slot.
Most campaigns never make it to level 20, or even close. The highest level I’ve ever gotten to was level 11. So build it level by level with your end build as your goal and make sure that it’s fun at every level, not just 20th.
Except in very rare circumstances I usually only plan one level ahead of where I currently am. When I’m starting a character I plan what archetype I’ll pick and I’ve even ended up changing that before between 1st level and when I got there.
Tim, i appreciate the advice, and all-though I do also have a general level by level plan, the build doesn't really come in to its own until level 15 (warlock 5, cleric 2, sorc 3 at which point its mostly just damage scaling and my melee knockbacks from there on. I currently am level 5 (cleric 1/sorc 1/warlock 3) planning to take warlock to 5 first off, then likely my second level of cleric, followed by 3 more sorc. but i am flexible to changing progression based on circumstances.
IMO - I feel like you are doing a lot of work for that damage at level 20 on a single target and burning your resources early with a specific set of actions.
At level 20 targets are going to be: immune to certain kinds of damage (possibly lightning); using legendary resistance or at least really good saving throws; have lots of good minions to gang up on you; probably not put themselves in a position where first round involves getting hammered, lightning bolted and smited by just one character (since others could conceivably do the same); and likely to cast Darkness, Silence, Anti-Magic fields or other things that shut the build down.
If you enjoy the character, great! Do what you want. If you are doing it for a very specific set of circumstances to nova/alpha strike at level 20, you'll be disappointed.

Professional computer geek
multiple targets is definitely an area where this build seems to be lacking.
I'm leaning towards up-casting Dragon's breath (lightning) when viable, though this would cost me my elemental weapon.
other options include eldritch blast with agonizing and repelling
thunder wave could also be good as I'm planning on being pretty close to the action
off the top of your head are there any other ones I could consider? I'm going for lightning/thunder/force theme where possible.
