I'm looking for a 5th level build that will be a homewrecker. I've historically only played with spell casters, but I'm open to any/all suggestions. Ideally, I'm going to make two different builds... one in case it's a hack-n-slash dominant campaign, the other in case it's more role-playing oriented. But, regardless, it's a campaign that I'll be joining late... hence, the 5th level character.
My problem? I've only ever really DMed in the past, at least the recent past. (I still have a character, but it's one that I haven't played since my late-teens/early-20s. I'm hoping he's just sitting in his keep, reading and eating the finest meats and cheeses.)
Anyway, any takers? The more OP, the better, but I think we'd be limited to offical WotC materials. (Basic, PHB, XGE, etc...)
I'm going to get to rolling. If anybody's interested, I'd appreciate the help and input. If not, then I hope it's because you're having too much fun in your own games. =)
You'll get more replies if you narrow down what you want to something more than OP and official.
For what it's worth, I'm partial to grapplers. Half-Orc Eldritch Knight with the prodigy feat for expertise in Athletics and tavern brawler feat for extra unarmed damage and improvised weapons. Is it OP? Only in some circumstances, but mostly it's just fun.
There are literally dozens of PC optimization guides that you can find. But every single one of them is focused on how to optimize a single PC, not on how to optimize a party and that makes all of them weak in my opinion.
My advice if you want to really break the DM’s spirit is find out what the makeup of the party is and come up with creative synergies where your PC will enhance them and they’ll enhance you. My favorite synergy after playing a Circle of the Moon Druid is partnering with an arcane caster to cast Mage Armor on the Druid because that doesn’t require Concentration, it lasts for 8 hours, and it increases the AC of every single beast that the Druid can Wild Shape into until 6th level by either 2 or 3 and even at 6th level there is only one beast with a natural AC that’s more than 13. It’s subtle, but it’s a huge, huge advantage for the party as a whole.
Find out what the other PCs in the party are and design your PC for synergies with them. That’s much more powerful than designing your PC to be super powerful.
Another key factor is what kind of game you are playing.
ARe you going up against a lot of enemys that happen to have Darkvision? Roll out the new Gloom Ranger and multiclass into Rogue. Constant Invisability when in dim light and darkness, that gives advantage to attacks and advantage procs Sneak Attack.
Going up against Giants? Two options, Ranger Hunter focused on Giants for extra damage. Or a Str focused Barbarian and get your DM to bring out the gear needed to get a full power Hammer of Thunderbolts. Get a Str nearly to 30, a massive Hit score and go around topping Giants like they are trees.
There's a lot that goes into breaking a DM's game, one of those is what kind of game the DM is playing.
Straight up moon Druid is really hard to kill. Take primal savagery and at 5th level you have a cantrip good for 2d10 acid damage every round. Moonbeam is great crowd control and shapeshifter nerf. Your animal forms get magical attacks at 6th level, you can fly at 8th, and by 10th you can become an earth elemental and pop out of the ground to ruin someone’s day.

Sorlock can start to come online at level 5 (warlock 2/sorcerer 3).

Halfling divination wizard with the Lucky feat.
Oh that did not land? reroll.
Oh he hit me? reroll

Also, totem barbarians can be frustrating, when raging everything that isn't psychic damage is halved.
Half-Orc Champion Fighter 3/Paladin 2+...fairly powerful build with some fun roleplaying potential, all about getting crits and making them hurt!
But yeah Moon Druid is broken all on its own, so much so that I refuse to play it. :-)
