So I’ve been part of a game for roughly a year now playing Out of The Abyss. It’s been a whole lot of fun finally playing a character I’ve wanted to play for 15 years now (I’m the forever dm and that dm of every group) that being a Drow Transmutation Wizard specifically in the exotic world of the under Dark. Yes yes Drow are over played and I have a Drizzt crush and no I don’t play chaotic good.
That aside two players in the group recently broke up and the guy is no longer joining us and his girlfriend is still part of it. Which I’m cool with, real life happens and there are things that we can’t account for. Now the campaign has been canceled completely. I’ve been as well as the other players instructed by the Dm to make a whole new character when we arrive and that the new campaign will be announced when we get there. Now my current dm is an awesome guy and it’s super fun to play with this group. But getting the whole campaign canceled at lv 7 playing my dream character in my dream campaign really blows. Like so bad I feel kinda ... burned out? We put a lot of role play and inter character development into these characters and relationships as well as the large amount of time.
I can only assume the campaign will be a constant reminder to this player of her boyfriend but frankly it feels childish for it to be canceled. Once more I get it and likely would feel the same way if it was me though so I’m not going to be a raging jerk about it as once again this is a game and this other issue is a real world heartbreak. My issue is though - what do I do with this character burn out feeling? After playing what I’ve always wanted to, specifically the class of Wizard which having played one now. No class seems as intricately interesting to me. The year before I played a warlock of several different pacts as that dm was just... psychotic and forced me to change constantly. A fighter for 2, a monk for 2 levels and finally a sorcerer lv 3-6.
What do I do? Is there any class/race combination or individually that has such a widespread possibilities and rich detailed world building as the one I’ve played before? Perhaps it seems silly, all of it but any help would be much appreciated as I don’t want to stop playing with my friends, I just feel. Lost?
Thanks everyone. I’d appreciate any comments or thoughts, even a troll is a welcome reply
That sucks man. But things happen, games get cancelled all the time. Keep your character, put them on the back burner and hopefully you can use them again in the future in another game.
As far as advice for a new character goes, if you want something fun with lots of options both in and out of combat, I would say go with a Druid. Like Wizards they have a wide pool of spells they can select after a long rest, and they really do have a lot of fun options. Circle of Moon is the typical go-to, but is my personal least favorite. Circle of Land is the most "wizard-esque" Druid subclass, and I've personally had a lot of fun with Circle of Dreams if you like healing and Feywild aspects.
A campaign ending sucks, losing the invested roleplay and character building sucks, but just try and enjoy your new character; character building is one of the most fun parts of DnD.
In my opinion everything you are feeling is perfectly, reasonably normal. And it sounds like you are doing your best to be understanding and mature about the situation! Interpersonal conflict at the table can happen, and when the fallout affects the game and character you love it's especially difficult. On the positive side it sounds like you still really enjoy your DM and fellow players, and in my experience when I fall in love with playing a character half the reason is because of interactions with my group. So I think that rich, detailed worldbuilding you enjoyed is still there!
You might want to request a new Session zero from your players and DM. Get together, have some snacks, and talk through what you all want to do next before jumping into a new campaign with new PCs. Hearing what your friends are thinking about playing might inspire your character creation ideas, or learning about what kind of campaign the DM is planning might give you backstory ideas. And they will also be inspired hearing your ideas! It might also give you and your friends a moment to talk through the ending of the last campaign and ease into the new one, helping with that feeling of loss. My guess is that if you feel that way, they do to!
"(I’m the forever dm and that dm of every group)" If that ain't a mood ;-;
Well I think I can commiserate with you a little. I'm pretty much never allowed to play cause no one wants to DM. Every single campaign I've been apart of has fallen apart. There's the one that hasn't been touched in 7 months cause one guy wont give us a schedule, there's another where the DM "isn't dont planning yet" and its been a year, the one where we played once and then every just went radio silent, etc. There's this new campaign that I get to be apart of that should be pretty stable but its taken 3 months to actually organized and we still aren't ready. The furthest I've ever gotten in a was level 7 too! And it sucks. It sucks so bad to be in that position. Your emotions are hella valid.
My advice would be to just talk it out. Maybe you can chat with the DM and bring your character back? Or figure out another cool character? Unfortunately life does happen, but the most important thing of any campaign is the people you're playing with. You'll be able to have fun no matter what if you have a good crew! Maybe you won't be able to play your awesome character, but you might just be able to make a new one. At the very least, you'll be able to make some new memories with your friends.
That's a drag. I applaud your sensitivity to your friend snd her breakup.
So in practical terms, if you want to play a wizard in your next campaign, play a wizard. Best way to get over a loss is to get back on the horse. If you never get to play and always have to DM, it might not seem like it, but the more you flex your creative muscles, the more you realize that no character is some great irreplaceable masterpiece. Coincidentally, this is also the advice I'd give the young lady about her boyfriend.
In a little while, if you still wish you were playing the drow, draw a picture or write a page about what they're up to. Maybe they can make a comeback as an NPC when you DM again.
I've only been in one campaign that went silent after a couple sessions, and just started a new one, so take what I say with a grain of salt:
I'd recommend talking with your group more in-depth about what you want to do with this new campaign. If you really want to keep your old character, discuss with them and see if you guys can work out a way for them to come into the story, though you may need to have a temp character until you reach the level of your old character. At the same time, you may grow to like this new character and want to stick with them instead.
In regards to a new character: It sounds like you need to find something more unique than "Human Fighter" or "Elf Archer". My advice is to get weird with your character. Maybe make a cleric that uses every necromancy spell that they can get their hands on or an apparent edgelord character (maybe a tiefling warlock) that's actually a sweetheart and has a hard time killing people. Alternatively, you could try mixing races and classes that may seem weird. Maybe a Goliath wizard who doesn't actually know how to organize spells properly so their spellbook is a mess, or an Orc who became a priest because they get annoyed by people dying when they should be fighting. If you want to play another drow, you could do a drow priest with the light domain (since drow don't typically like sunlight).
Ultimately, I feel like your race and class don't have a huge impact in how much you can affect world building. It's more about your background and motives. They do affect it a bit (a wizard is more likely to be a nerd than a barbarian is), but you could technically play any character however you want. You just need to come up with reasons why they may act different from the typical tropes (such as a lizardman being an emotional wreck).
Have you considered talking to your friends about it? Tell them what you told us, you've dreamed about playing /that/ character in an underdark campaign for 15 years and you feel pretty gutted by this decision. It's not going to be fun being stuck playing something that you've not got any interest in.
If they are dead-set on something new though, go the otherway. Make the elfiest duergar that ever elfed. I've got a buddy who's a huge duergar fan and gives me crap about my drow fandom. So, as a joke, I modified a duergar character that I had been playing with. To deal with sunlight sensitivity, I decided I needed to be a barbarian so I can reckless attack in direct sunlight. He started off as flail and shield. When I decided to make him into a joke, I replaced his flail with a rapier. Fluff the shield into a buckler. Now instead of a dwarfy barbarian, he's more of a duelist type. Give him the musketeer/Jarlaxle treatment with a big floppy hat with a huge feather in it. His rapier still works with str, so mechanically it's exactly the same as any sword and board barbarian with a flail/warhammer/longsword/morningstar, what-have-you...he's just fluffed into a very elfy dwarf.
For his backstory, he was captured very young by the drow, and he was purchased by a young, up-and-coming drow. This drow decided that to gain some house's attention, he was going to take a brutish duergar, and train him as a duellist. Surely anyone who could make a Duergar into a deadly duellist would gain some attention. While he was at it, might as well make some money betting on his duergar in the fighting pits.
Along with becoming a very skilled practitioner of the rapier, he learned to channel his shame and humiliation. After some time, and a lot of gladiator fights, the drow /did/ attract the attention of a house, although a lower ranking house. A slightly higher ranked house decided to attack them because the house was now perceived as a threat with their new, highly regarded weaponsmaster. In the confusion, the duergar, who was sent forth to help defend the house, slipped away and after a series of adventures made his way to wherever the party is.
Any time an unfathomably powerful entity sweeps in and offers godlike rewards in return for just a few teensy favors, it’s a scam. Unless it’s me. I’d never lie to you, reader dearest.
I love the idea of a barbarian the uses a rapier but uses it like a club or baton. (idk if your barbarian is like this but still) He pulls out a rapier and everyone expects graceful footwork and precise attacks, then he just just starts swinging it wildly and hammerfisting with the rapier to stab people.
I now want to make a character that has a mace, but it's flavored as a rapier that's really dull so he holds the dull blade and smashes people with the hilt.

Try the Matt Colville method - roll up some stats *in order* and then discover who the heck this character is.
