My DM is planning a pull-no-punches one shot for 20th level characters. It's planned around an epic battle/siege type thing so not expecting much in the way of RP or exploration. So far the group has a Halfling assassin, a tabaxi monk and a half-orc fighter. I'm thinking we need some support magic. I initially thought of a storm socrcerer 18/tempest cleric 2. Though I already play a sorcerer so I'd prefer something a bit different.
Or I could go for a pure life cleric and keep everyone on their feet but this just feels boring.
I'm looking for a balance of healing spells and crazy combo stuff that's going to super-charge the rest of the party - haste, greater invisibility, wish etc.
I've looked at wizard but struggled to build one at 20th level.
A Divine Soul Sorcerer mixed with a Life Cleric (and possible a Celestial Warlock) would give you access to everything you want. You'll be able to Twin Haste your martials (which would allow your Rogue to set up two Sneak Attacks a turn using readied actions), Twin Healing Word, cast Wish and have access to all the great Cleric Healing and control spells (Spirit Guardians, why not throw Spiritual Weapon in there too beef up damage output?). I'd say Divine Soul 17, Life 1, Celestial 2 would give you all you're looking for. Race wise a Half Elf makes the stats for this the easiest and gives you the option of Elven Accuracy for spamming Eldritch Blast if you'd like.
If you're looking for a control Wizard then a straight Divination Wizard making use of a Simulacrum (which will also have Portent) would be very powerful, just pick up Tough with one of your ASIs to improve survivability.
You could go 20 levels of Arcana Domain cleric and have healing spells, guaranteed Divine Intervention, and Wish. The Arcane Abjuration and Spell Breaker features may also prove useful.

I like this idea, though I have absolutely NO interest in half elves so I'm going to go for a scourge Aasimar instead. I know there's a bit of overlap with abilities but I think it works.
I rolled stats and came up with 17, 17, 15, 12, 12, 11. So I'm thinking 17s to Con and Cha, giving me an 18 and a 19 at level 1. 15 Wis, 12 Int and Dex the 11 Str.
2 ASI's to bring Con and Cha to 20 and Wis to 16. From there I'm thinking Resilient Dex feat, leaving me one more ASI or feat.
We have been allowed to select some magical gear for our characters but we need to justify how we obtained them. For 20th level I don't think a single legendary item would be out of the question. Then maybe one or two lower level items. So I'm looking at the Staff of the Magi, backed up by something like the cloak of protection and maybe one other thing, not sure what though.
Then I just have to build an interesting personality for him.
Maaaaay want to have a backup plan for the staff, given that Staves of the Magi are game breakers that are, by themselves and alone, more powerful than half the game's 20th-level spellcasters. A Staff of Power is more feasible - still enormously powerful, especially for sorcerers, but less "Yeah lol no"-worthy from a GM.
Consider doing a +1 to Dex for your second ASI if you're going with Resilient: Dex. That gets you to 14DX, and your Life cleric level gets you proficiency with both medium armor and shields. Dragon Scale Mail would get you to 17AC if you have 14DX (19AC if you use a shield), and given that you get to craft the story of how you obtained the armor you can more or less pick the resistance you'd like to have. Much easier to convince your DM you did something awesome for dragonscale than for a Staff of the Magi or a Staff of Power.
If the odd-numbered stat for Wisdom still bothers you, then you can finish with Resilient: Wis to even it up and get brain control save proficiency, or do the usual boring thing with War Caster (which you may have to do if you're using both a magical staff and a shield). Several ways to go with it, really.
