So i want to create a party of opposites for my group to encounter. They are an Open Hand Tabaxi Monk, a Human Rogue Thief, and a Wood Elf Beastmaster Ranger (archer). I want these foils to be basically their "mirrorverse" counterparts. Perhaps they took different career paths, perhaps the same but the idea is that in the encounter they would each target one of the players original characters (not necessarily their double).
But that got me thinking about creating a character of my own for a game thats purpose was to hunt a specific class of individual. We have heard of the mage slayer, but who best to send after a fugitive ranger? what class would hunt and take on solo (if they didn't join a party) a wayward Cleric? Who goes after the artificer creating weapons for militants? Or ensures the druid doesn't attempt to upend civilisation? Or pursues and subdues the thieves who have been leaving bodies in their wake?
Could we find a foil for each class or would you need a foil for each subclass?
So, i am interested in answers/ideas for either of the above scenarios. Could be interesting.
For the monk, a wizard with fly and a wand of magic missles, negates his speed, and melee tricks, and he can’t deflect the magic ones.
For the thief, a melee type that can get in his face, and hit really hard, maybe a barbarian who also has a longbow, so when the rogue starts to bonus action dash away, he can keep up better and still has enough range to hit him.
For the archer ranger, maybe someone who gets up close. Like a monk who can deflect the arrows on his way in (or stealth up close) and then stun lock him.
For the Monk, choose a Cleric, maybe with the Heavy Armor Master feat to handle the flurry of small attacks, and definitely with Spirit Guardians to decrease the Monk's mobility. Or maybe a Druid or Bard casting Plant Growth.
For the Rogue, pick a Melee character with the Sentinel feat to keep the Rogue from disengaging and running away. If he's a ranged Rogue, you might want to make this melee enemy a Barbarian or Monk for the extra speed. For a melee Rogue, you could do a Paladin or Cleric, and play up the holy crusader part of their personality.
For the Ranger, pick a Bard that casts Vicious Mockery on him every round and mocks him for choosing the worst subclass in the game, and actually causes him to take damage because he's so hurt by the insults to his choice of subclass.
I read a comic where the leader of the heroes was the dumbest of the duplicates and the dumbest of the heroes was the leader of the duplicates (with a backward spelling of the name - turns out they were twins separated by birth - one raised by the pacifist parent and the other raised by the warlord parent).
All the classes were effectively the same, but (this was 3.5e) the duplicates were made up of complicated multiclassing and feats to end up the same as the heroes - different alignments and patron deities. I don't see a way to do the same in 5e, but it would be kinda funny if the foils were the effectively same classes but built in a complicated way.
Human. Male. Possibly. Don't be a divider. My characters' backgrounds are written like instruction manuals rather than stories. My opinion and preferences don't mean you're wrong. I am 99.7603% convinced that the digital dice are messing with me. I roll high when nobody's looking and low when anyone else can see.🎲 “It's a bit early to be thinking about an epitaph. No?” will be my epitaph.
For the monk, do a tanky barbarian. Imagine martial arts movies where the masterful fighter encounters a hulking behemoth and feels utterly helpless attempting to use their martial prowess in defeating this monstrosity.
For the rogue, choose a class with high AC (probably fighter, paladin or cleric). They have a high damage dealer but it’s hard to take damage if you can’t be hit, also bonus to paladin or cleric. In the event they do get hit, they can heal up to negate the life loss.
For the ranger, you have monk which can catch and throw arrows back, perhaps spell casters that can fire back or use spells to debuff and decrease the ranger’s chance of landing hits? Maybe even a Druid that’ll shape-shift into beasts (think the hunter becomes the hunted).
Hopefully that gives you some help as to what you’re looking for. If you’d like anymore ideas, feel free to reach out to me. I’d be more than happy to help :)
Mirrorverse Tabaxi is now a barbarian/echo knight fighter (champion of Time) going after the rogue.
Mirrorverse Elf is now a Nature Cleric (Champion of Nature) for targeting the monk.
Mirrorverse Human is now a Hexblade using Darkness (champion of Order) to inhibit the archery of the Ranger.
would you build these as PCs? or make them monsters complete with additional abilities/magic items. The party is likely to face this encounter at level 8, or maybe ill have them meet each one individually but with their own minions...hmmm
What other classes can act as opposites. They have an NPC Lore Bard, and a part time PC Champion Fighter that joins them sometime. Who would be their foils? What class would act as a good foil to a Paladin?
Im doing something very similar to my group. Doing White Plume Mountain. 3 legendary weapons have been stolen and found in the mountain and must be recovered but other adventures have already gotten the notice or hired directly by those stolen from.
The adventure itself doesn't place any other parties but I plan on having a few littered around but the last boss, would instead be replaced by another opposing party.. As they're entering the room theyre going to strike a final blow then turn to face the group for the final prize.
My players consist of a life cleric (heal & tank), whisper bard (front & mid) , pact of blade Kraken lock (front off tank), swarm hunter & drag sorc. Also a barbarian who comes once in a while.
I mainly made the other team the other classes. Paladin with PaM & Sentinel (looking forward to using him but wouldve loved it more if we had a monk or melee rogue). Arcane archer to mirror the ranger. Enchantment wizard to CC. Rogue & shadow monk to skirmish & dream druid to heal.
I made the group like real Pcs using character builder but had a battle between "my" group n the intended boss so theyre not at full health when my players encounter them. If any of the players are absent I'll just reduce any of my groups numbers.
Since they're around the same level I highly doubt ita a fair fight *shrug*
Its also a great way to supplement any items. Like my ranger doesnt want to upgrade his gear because of the disadvantage to stealth so a cool way to give him mithral armor. Or like only 2 out of the group dont have nightvision so I gave 2 of them goggles of night to loot so none of us have to deal with it any more

For the monk: Use a homebrew dog race barbarian that hates cats.
For the Rogue: Use a oath of devotion paladin.
For the Ranger: Use a evil necromancer wizard that thinks animals are a bane to this world.
When the DM smiles, it is already to late.

Im currently thinking the below:

Mirrorverse Elf is now a Nature Cleric (Champion of Nature) for targeting the monk.

Yeah, im thinking about kiting the opposition out with items. This boosts them and a nice treat for the players.
