I was wondering if there was a viable way to make a blood hunter who prefers to duke it out Witcher-style: one longsword, a slew of mutagens, and maximum edginess!
Okay, maybe not the edgy part, but still…
Was thinking of taking up the dueling fighting style so that not-Geralt-Junior can go one-handed for spell casting without having to sacrifice those additional two points of damage that come with going two-handed.
However, seeing as how I’m still kind of a rookie, I’m not one-hundred percent certain this is the optimal solution. Thoughts and/or advice?
Dueling could be a good choice for that, yes. Since most of the mutagens have such a long duration, you probably don’t even need the free hand. The way they’re written, I think you’d basically consume it either out of combat, or right when you make it, since they won’t last until the end of your next rest. That being the case, there’s really not much need to keep the other hand free. So, I’d suggest picking up a shield for that +2 to AC in your free hand. I know that’s not the way Gerald rolls, but otherwise you’ve got an empty hand and nothing to do with it. The alternative could be to go great weapon. Or, I suppose two-weapon. In each case, you just really want to find something to do with that other hand.
I should say I’ve never played a blood hunter, so they might work differently in reality. I’m certainly open to being corrected.
Yeah. Or half elf, and dump stat charisma. Elves can work, and help take the stress out of good AC, damage and blood magic stuff. If you want to see what I have to say, check out the thread 'Want to make a Witcher like character'. It's on either tips and tactics or story and lore. Probably lore.
I run campaigns with blood hunters in them (one lycan, one mutant) both of them have taken the dueling fighting style and both use longswords. One is a minotaur and one is a dragonborn.
Blood hunter + longsword + dueling is a solid choice.

I'd start with variant human and snag magic initiate or war caster feat to start.

Edit: it is on tips and tactics.

Was planning on going half Elf, so that works.
