That is technically how it works already. That's why they are written as 'a Wisdom (Perception) check,' for example. Because you're meant to call for an ability check, and then apply a skill proficiency if you have one. It's just not how we normally think of them because the skills are shown with their most common ability. And rather than say 'make a Wisdom check and add your Perception proficiency if you have it," it's much more natural to say 'Make a Perception check.' We just understand that to mean use Wisdom if it isn't specified.

Are Skill checks going to be Make a stat roll (CHA, DEX, ECT.) and apply a relevant skill if you are trained in it.
