They way that it was framed was, that its technically possible, as in the "technology" of both 2014 and 5e revised is close enough that they are compatible. My guess is that there wont be any official ruling regard phb on phb mix and matching in general but only how to adapt subclasses. This would mean general mixing phbs would be considered homebrew and up to the DMs approval. Considering that 5e revised also "tried" to balance specifically the paladin there is a high chance a DM wouldn't allow for such a combination in particular.
The intention is that a 2014 Paladin and 2024 Warlock could play at the same table in the same party. Not that you could multiclass between the two versions especially because some of the changes are specifically to prevent some broken multiclass combos like bear barbarian.
The reasoning behind that was not make regular smite infinitely superior to all the other smites. They also made the other smites better by removing concentration unless you are maintaining an effect. So yes they did reduce the power level of regular smite but they also brought up the power level of the other smites.

Would it be possible to mix and match classes.
Would like 2014 Paladin and 2024 Warlock to better match the feel of my Current character.
Are they just aiming for using the new PHB with Existing adventures?

DO not like that 2024 Paladin Smite stops me from using any class/species Bonus action abilities.
