For those of you rocking the much-loved Tomelock, how do you flavor your Book of Shadows? And for DMs, how much leeway do you allow your players when coming up with their own ideas? Right up front, I'm not suggesting any changes to statistics in-game whatsoever, just flavor.
To start with an example, I'm massively in love with the psionic flavor of the Great Old One patron. I like the idea of a character having a psionically-active data crystal instead of an actual book. Think of it as a psionic data repository, or a neural codex that stores the information the character has access to. Instead of purchasing special inks, the gold cost listed in the PHB could be for acids/tools/etc. used to inscribe the appropriate psionic circuitry.
Anyway, that's the sort of ideas I like toying around with when flavoring a character. I'm super excited to see what you guys do with your warlock characters who take the Pact of the Tome, or what you allow as DMs for your players who do.
I asked my DM about turning my book into a ships lantern for my Fathomless. He told me it had to be a book.
I asked if it could be the ships ledger from my sunken boat. He said it couldn't be a book that exists already.
Either my DM has had bad experiences with flavor getting out of control, or it doesn't really matter what characters there are, it's the world that plays.

That seems unnecessarily...restrictive.
I mean, the PHB gives Wizard players more design leeway with their spellbooks. Sounds like your DM is REALLY hung up on text as written.
Kick him in the shin and charge it to me. Ha ha ha! ;)
