I'm proposing a group dedicated to volunteering to convert spells from earlier versions of the game into 5e spells.
While people currently have the ability to add new spells, there really isn't a lot of community support (peer review, encouragement, collective brainstorming, etc.) for that. This proposal is to fill that need.
Not every spell from earlier versions needs to be converted. Some spells need to be combined. Some spells already exist in another form. Some spells are just too much of a hassle for the GM. On the other hand, there is a HUGE catalogue of spells from earlier editions; wood shape, sticks to snakes, the wild magic spells from 2e, etc.
I'd be tentatively interested, as I enjoy homebrewing stuff; I tend to prefer to reimagine older spells though, rather than simply port them to a newer edition, though I guess it depends on the spell. For example, I recently added Halaster's Grappling Hand and Halaster's Shaking Hand, which are two old spells but my versions are quite a bit different.
Shaking Hand for example used to just be a Bigby's Hand that could also intercept other Bigby's Hands, whereas I made it a bit more general use as an anti-magic hand spell (so Chill Touch, Mage Hand etc., and also Halaster's Grappling Hand, are also affected). Grappling Hand became a non-concentration defensive spell that can block a few hits or grapple someone.
I have fun with them, but maybe you had in mind more of a straight port of what the spells used to do?
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
Former D&D Beyond Customer of six years: With the axing of piecemeal purchasing, lack of meaningful development, and toxic moderation the site isn't worth paying for anymore. I remain a free user only until my groups are done migrating from DDB, and if necessary D&D, after which I'm done. There are better systems owned by better companies out there.
I have unsubscribed from all topics and will not reply to messages. My homebrew is now 100% unsupported.
