A player of mine wants to use the true naming wizard and I was curious if there was any specific spell combinations that I should watch out for as a Dm that I have not foreseen being a problem. Although I know Onomancey is powerful being the equivalent of metamagic I’m looking for things that are obviously game breaking so as to talk to him beforehand over the what is allowed and what should be done in limited amounts.
any help is appreciated as I’m having a hard time prepping the adventure as well as finding any info on this playtested class
If you allow UA at your table, the UA cantrip Mind Sliver is a pretty good Action and Bonus Action combo with the Extract Name feature. If the creature fails the Int save, it takes physic damage and must roll a d4 and subtract the number from the next saving throw (i.e. the Extract Name wisdom saving throw). However, this combo relies on 2 Savings throws which is definitely not game-breaking.
As far as Onomancey goes, I’m not really sure it is all that powerful. The entire subclass hinges on a Wisdom Saving throw and can’t be used again on a creature with a successful save. Also, it seems that the consensus is that this feature has no effect on creatures that are immune to the Charmed condition. There are a ton of monsters that are immune to charm, especially BBEG’s. That really gimps the Onomancer.
I can't really speak to any o.p. spell combinations, but part of the conversation I would have with any player that wants to use UA/playtest (not playtested) material is that is precisely that, playtest. WOC publishes UA so that people will use it and find the quirky problems that aren't obvious. As such, rather than trying to foresee any and all problems, I would tell the player that the caveat of playing test material is that if something becomes a problem we'll have to find a way to nerf it. On the other side of the coin, if it seems like the character is lagging I'd entertain changes that would make them more powerful. But you both should understand going into the game that the material is not perfected and you should expect hiccups.
Both of those replies have given me a bit of insight into what I should expect and some understanding on how very little can be currently predicted. Thank you both :)
