Weapon (longsword), uncommon
- Size and Weight: Montantes are notably large, often matching or exceeding the height of the wielder, typically ranging from 1.6 to 2 meters (5.5 to 6.5 feet) in total length. Despite their imposing size, their weight is often surprisingly manageable, usually between 2 to 2.5 kg (4.4 to 5.5 lbs), allowing for agile, albeit powerful, two-handed manipulation. Heavier examples (up to 4 kg) were generally for ceremonial use.
- Blade: The blade is long and typically straight, though some variations might have slight curves. It's often broad at the hilt and tapers towards a sharpened point. Many montantes feature a "ricasso" – an unsharpened section of the blade just above the guard, sometimes covered in leather, which allowed the wielder to grip it for closer-quarters combat or leverage (known as "half-swording"). Some might also feature "parrying hooks" (or Parierhaken) on the blade above the ricasso, though these are more strongly associated with the zweihänder.
- Hilt: The hilt is designed for a firm, two-handed grip and is generally quite long, often exceeding one-third of the blade's length. This extended grip allows for significant leverage and power generation.
- Crossguard (Quillons): The crossguard is usually substantial, providing good hand protection. While many examples feature straight quillons, some might have curved or swept quillons. Side rings, providing additional hand protection, are also a common feature.
- Pommel: The pommel is typically robust and often heavy, serving as a counterbalance to the long blade, contributing to the sword's overall balance and maneuverability. Common pommel shapes include pear, wheel, or ovoid.
