Weapon (crossbow, hand), legendary (requires attunement by a warlock or wizard)

This elegant hand crossbow is wrought of blackened steel and star-forged thorns, its form twisting slightly in the corner of your vision. It hums with gravity and sorrow, as though aware of distant wars, lamenting lost souls with a dirge. The weapon speaks to its wielder as the Thorned Star-General—with a calm, commanding whisper that promises greatness in return for loyalty.

You gain a +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon. In addition, this item can act as an arcane focus.

Sentience. Thorn of the Star-General is a sentient lawful neutral weapon with an Intelligence of 17, a Wisdom of 10, and a Charisma of 19. It has hearing and darkvision out to a range of 120 feet. The weapon can speak, read, and understand Common, and can communicate with its wielder telepathically. Its voice is barely a whisper, yet stern and calculating. While you are attuned to it, the Thorn also understands every language you know.

Personality. During an encounter, the Thorned Star-General speaks with a tactical and cold tone. During times of rest, the Star-General speaks with a melodic voice, filling its wielder’s mind with music: sometimes comforting, sometimes sorrowful, but always slow and soft.

The Thorned Star-General was once betrayed by the Queen of the Unseelie Court, and therefore displays a distrust of most Fey creatures. Despite their dislike of the Fey, the Star-General is known to reach out to their wielder with promises of power in exchange for something the wielder has that they deem of equivalent value.

Gravity Weapon. This magic hand crossbow has 3 charges, and it regains 1d3 expended charges daily at dawn. You can use the charges in the following ways while holding it:

  • Gravitic Pull. When you hit a creature with this weapon, you may spend 1 charge to pull the target in a direction of your choice (no action required). The target must make a DC 15 Strength saving throw. On a failed save, the target is pulled up to 10ft in any direction you choose.
  • Stasis Bolt. When you hit a creature with this weapon, you may spend 1 charge to restrain the target (no action required). The target must make a DC 15 Constitution saving throw. On a failed save, the target is restrained until the end of your next turn. If a creature who fails this save is in the air, gravitational energy weighs them down, and they are pulled to the ground, regardless of their ability to hover.

Tempting Bargains. The Thorn of the Star-General may whisper an offer to enhance your abilities, be they mundane or magical, offensive or defensive. The GM may offer you a custom boon in exchange for your character paying a cost of some kind, or you may likewise ask your GM for a boon. Some boons may include:

  • You may cast the heightened version of a spell you know with a lower spell slot.
  • You gain advantage on your next ranged attack roll.
  • You may reroll a failed save.
  • You give an enemy disadvantage on their next save.

Work with your GM to determine the exact details of both the benefit and the detriment to the character. Once this weapon’s feature has been used, the Thorn of the Star-General is unable to offer any additional bargains until next dawn.

Proficiency with a Hand Crossbow allows you to add your proficiency bonus to the attack roll for any attack you make with it.

This weapon has the following mastery property. To use this property, you must have a feature that lets you use it.

Vex. If you hit a creature with this weapon and deal damage to the creature, you have Advantage on your next attack roll against that creature before the end of your next turn.
