The souls of countless creatures are contained inside this lantern, which draws power from the well of souls. The souls bound to the lantern can’t be harmed, turned, or raised from the dead by any means short of a wish spell. While holding the lantern, you can command the spirits as a bonus action to shed bright light in a 30-foot radius and dim light for an additional 30 feet.
The lantern has 10 charges for the following properties.
Capture Soul
You can use your reaction when a humanoid dies within 60 feet of the lantern. If you do so, the lantern absorbs the creature's soul, gaining a number of charges equal to the the creature’s number of Hit Dice, up to a maximum of 10. Once used, this ability can’t be used again until the next dawn.
Soul Bargaining
You can draw souls from the lantern to bargain with devils, liches, and other creatures who value the souls of the dead. You can use an action and expend 5 charges to gain advantage on Charisma checks against one creature for 1 hour. You can use this feature when casting infernal calling or planar ally to compel conjured devils to obey all your commands, with no Charisma checks required.
Spells
If you control the lantern, you can use an action and expend 1 or more charges to cast one of the following spells from it, using your spell save DC and spellcasting ability: dissonant whispers (3rd-level version, 3 charges), guardian of faith (4 charges), healing spirit (2 charges), phantasmal killer (4 charges), or spirit guardians (3 charges).
You can also cast magic jar or soul cage from the lantern, using it as the material component. Once used, this property can’t be used again until the next dawn.
Curse
Countless souls are imprisoned within the lantern, longing to be freed. Each time a creature expends any of the lantern’s charges, there is a 10 percent chance that a soul tries to possess the wielder. The wielder must succeed on a DC 20 Charisma saving throw or be possessed, becoming an NPC under the DM’s control. If the intruding life force is targeted by magic such as a dispel evil and good spell, it becomes trapped in the lantern once more.
Destroying the Lantern of Souls
Though impervious to physical damage, the lantern can be destroyed by casting it into the well of souls, the supernatural vortex of death and rebirth. Upon its destruction, souls imprisoned by the lantern are released into the afterlife.
