Weapon (longsword), artifact (requires attunement by a by an elf or half elf of good alignment)

This potent weapon was created by the smiths of ancient Myth Drannor. Moonblades are used in the long process of selecting a ruler for the isle of Evermeet. A Moonblade choses its owner, and in the case of this sword it has chosen the elf Xan. Only Xan can use this blade, anyone else who tries will find themselves unable to even lift the sword.

You gain a +3 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this unbreakable magic longsword.

The first time you attack with the sword on each of your turns, you can transfer some or all of the sword's bonus to your Armor Class, instead of using the bonus on any attacks that turn. For example, you could reduce the bonus to your attack and damage rolls to +1 and gain a +2 bonus to AC. The adjusted bonuses remain in effect until the start of your next turn, although you must hold the sword to gain a bonus to AC from it.

While grasping the hilt of the sword you can use a free action to cause freezing blue flames to erupt from the blade, or to make the flames disappear. These "flames" shed bright light in a 40ft radius and dim light for an additional 40 feet beyond that. While the sword is a ablaze, it deals an extra 1d6 cold damage. In addition, while you hold the sword, you have resistance to fire damage. While the flames exist,  Xan's Moonblade has the finesse property and you can make one attack with it as a bonus action on each of your turns.

Sentience. Xan's Moonblade is sentient and neutral good weapon with an Intelligence of 12, a Wisdom of 10 and a Charisma of 12. It has hearing and darkvision out to a range of 120 feet. The weapon communicates by transmitting emotions sending a tingling through the wielders hand when it wants to communicate something it has sensed. It can communicate more explicitly, through visions or dreams, when the wielder is in trance.

Personality. Every Moonblade seeks the advancement of elvenking and elven ideals. Courage, loyalty, beauty, music and life are all part of its purpose. The weapon is bonded to the family line it is meant to serve. Once it has bonded with an owner who shares its ideals, its loyalty is absolute. If a moonblade has a flaw, its overconfidence. Once it has decided on an owner, it believes only that person should wield it, even if the owner falls short of the elven ideals.

Proficiency with a Longsword allows you to add your proficiency bonus to the attack roll for any attack you make with it.
