You can unlock these breath attacks by killing dragons but can only one of every single type of breath attack. You can upgrade the birth attack by killing a stronger dragon. (Example: if he had a breath attack of a young white or silver dragon, but then kill a adult white or silver dragon. That breath attack becomes the adult variant.)

As an action: you an do one breath attack and only one breath attack per day. The damage and DC save is the same as a youngling, young, adult and ancient dragon depending on the type of breath attack you have. (example: if you have the breath attack of a young red dragon and a Wyrmling black dragon those are the attacks you can use until you update it by killing a stronger dragon of each breath type)

On long rest you can choose to exchange the current birth attack into another of your choosing.
