Winterstone is a glowing blue crystalline rock found in the mountains of Algorfell.  The shard emits a sharp white light that radiates brightly for 20 ft. and dimly for another 20 ft. and is bitterly cold to the touch.  These crystalline structures are known to possess inherent magical properties and are well suited to store magic energies and even spells.  Winterstone crystals are most often embedded into magic items to store and amplify magic abilities, however even small shards of Winterstone can provide benefits if properly attuned.

The attuned wielder of a Winterstone shard gains the following benefits:

• Resistance to cold damage.
• As an action, the wielder of this item can cause a freezing gust of wind to blow until the end of its turn.  The gust disperses gas or vapor, and it extinguishes candles, torches, and similar unprotected flames in the area. It causes protected flames, such as those of lanterns, to dance wildly and has a 50 percent chance to extinguish them.  This ability can be used no more than once per short rest.
