Rod, uncommon
This flat iron rod has a button on one end. You can use an action to press the button, which causes the rod to become magically fixed in place. Until you or another creature uses an action to push the button again, the rod doesn't move, even if it is defying gravity. The rod can hold up to 8,000 pounds of weight. More weight causes the rod to deactivate and fall. A creature can use an action to make a DC 30 Strength check, moving the fixed rod up to 10 feet on a success.
Notes: Utility
Actually the amount of force a ship uses to go forward would be held by the 8000 lb limit, it could not hold that ship above water, but in the water it could hold it in place.
So fun
Oh, I wouldn't touch that. It's a load bearing rod.
you can also kill people by cutting them in half with it
In regards to spells that push objects away like Thunderwave (Druid lvl 1 or higher spell) could it move the Immovable Rod?? Cause the Rod says its fixed not secured.
It's more likely to tear a hole in a ship as the material the ship is made from probably can't sustain the limit despite the fact that the ship as a whole probably could.
I feel like the ship would need to be specifically designed around it, the same way an anchor is attached to the ship. Just have the rod on a chain, hit the button and you're anchored.
The Players Handbook says that:
It'd work if you had a druid make a pocket in the wood of the keel (backbone of the ship) place the rod in and activate, then seal it up.
The keel is not going to snap in the forces the ocean would put in it. But tide rising could sink it, or lowering could cause damage as it's fully held out of the water by the keel.
if you fight a big creature have a barbarian of someone go in its stomach and make it immovable then have everyone run and it might follow ripping its chest open
Boss fight: Takes out immovable rods and activates and them. Any player within ten feet of the boss can be struck for critical damage.
I mean it says it’s an immovable force so unless the healing skin has a weight of 8000 pounds I think it would just heal around it
but the creature could probably just click the button and let it out unless it was in an unreachable location
And even if you succeeded you have the whiplash to worry about
Actual I did the math and most giant can only like around 6000 lbs so they can't necessarily move it but could probably strength check it but that takes time.
In 6 seconds of freefall you will be going about 100 miles per hour. Now you try to *instantly* stop. That rod would slice you in half.
Okey, so it's immoveable, but in which inertia system?
Because let's say you are trying your cheezy maybe not too original strategy and put this down into the gullet of an ancient dragon.
Then the dragon flies away.
I would say the rod moves away with the dragon without actually moving. Well in a way it's always moving as long as Toril is a planet. But you put it in the stomach of a dragon where is stay, but the dragon itself is moving away.
As DM I'd allow Mage Hand to push the button.
My guess is the wording on Mage Hand not being able to activate magic items is intended to prevent people from using magic item charges, such as an Arcane Trickster using a Bonus Action to fire off a Wand of Magic Missiles or something. Pushing a button is different. RAW - it says "you or another creature" so even Unseen Servant cannot activate or deactivate the rod.
If Immovable Rod had charges you expended, I'd agree, but since it's simply a button, I'd totally allow anything that can hit the button to do it. Even throwing a rock into it, or poking it with a stick.
Use it to sink a ship? Knock a hole in the ship and stick the rod in. Tie a rope to it so even if it deactivates you can pull it back and do it again.
For falling a Fighter with multiple attacks could activate it multiple times a round along with bonus actions. Add a rope and a lot more options open up.
I built a rope and shield platform and with boots of striding and jumping set the rod at 30 feet. Then move cleric or mage out of melee combat range by hoisting them up. Don't always have time for this but has come in handy a time or two.
Works well in combination with a large shield as a quick wall for ranged protection or slowing down an enemy charge. Great in dungeons.
I have been lucky enough to pick up 2 in my adventures which really opens up creative possibilities for great role playing and creative solutions outside of hack and slash solutions. Use a modified arrow quiver for quick access and storage.
There's a reason I chose Battle Master over Barbarian 😁
Actually, according to the PHB, 8000 daggers.
What will supposedly happen?
