Armor (shield), rare (requires attunement)
While holding this shield, you have resistance to damage from ranged weapon attacks.
Curse. This shield is cursed. Attuning to it curses you until you are targeted by the remove curse spell or similar magic. Removing the shield fails to end the curse on you. Whenever a ranged weapon attack is made against a target within 10 feet of you, the curse causes you to become the target instead.
Shields require the Utilize action to Don or Doff. You gain the Armor Class benefit of a Shield only if you have training with it.
Notes: Resistance: Ranged Attacks, Warding, Cursed
This shield in the hands of a paladin fighter or cleric is one of the most powerful cursed items in the base game. The ability to redirect missiles from a wizard to a character with much higher AC and health, and now resistance, can be incredibly powerful. With the only drawback being missiles from friendly fire being attracted as well.
But If you're feeling like a mischievous a DM, make sure the wizard is the first one to pick this up.
*ranger shoots the orc you are in close combat with*
*You become the target instead*
This is only true if no one in your party uses missile weapons though. Otherwise, their arrows and bolts would hit you all the time, which I suspect is the actual point of this curse.
Protecting your allies and resisting damage? sign me up!
How does this work if there are two of them within 5ft of each other?
You're probably right, but personally I don't see it as a problem, the party would be aware that you're under this effect so if they merely account for that when choosing their targets there's no problem.
I think the party would only be aware if they cast identify on the shield or if the DM isn't very good at being subtle about curses. This item is more fun if you don't give away its secret.
Call for perception checks (or use passive perception) to see if the PCs recognize that an enemy tried to target the wizard but hit the fighter with this shield instead. Was it an accident or was it obviously wrong?
Instead of making the arrows change course dramatically, play with the battle a little bit. Ranger says, "I fire my bow at the goblin by Jeff." You respond with, "As you draw your bowstring and take aim, your foot gets caught in a root and you stumble, throwing off your shot and hitting Jeff instead."
There's lots of good narrative ways to play with the curse and not give it away for at least a few battles.
Actually it only attracts missiles if the TARGET is within 10 ft of you not the missile itself
It means your allies can't use range attacks against ennemies when you're in melee with them tho.
Oh oooh ow yikes
OMG what a shield for a tank
yeah
I agree. This combo would crash the matrix.
I would just toss a coin
Toss a coin, or pick whichever shield bearer would make more sense. If an archer is shooting at someone flanked on the left and right by two shields, coin toss. If the target is flanked front to back and the archer tries to shoot over his friend on the front flank, it would more than likely shoot the first shield user, etc. Just use your judgement 🤷‍♂️
Hi there, how many CA for this shield, a +2 or a+3, it's a rare item?
If a paladin attunes to this shield and notices the curse so throws it over a cliff. Can he then attune to a shield of Arrow-Catching and have 10foot ranged magnet with resistance to ranged attacks and +4 AC against ranged attacks?
Or is only the curse active so 10foot range magnet and +4 AC to ranged attacks?
Since removing the shield fails to end the curse?
You only gain the resistance to ranged attack while wielding the shield. So the effects of both shields don't stack unless your wielding both at the same time.
Not if the target of the attack is >10 ft away, but otherwise yes. May have to bring this into my campaign, as the party tends to be firing crossbow bolts and throwing daggers into close combat.
Presumably the curse doesn't attract missiles from attacks against which the shield bearer has total cover... but RAW, if the shield bearer is heavily obscured, the redirected missile attack is at disadvantage to hit the new target?
