A Peephole Ring is a plain silver band, with an image of an open eye that appears to be a centimeter inside the otherwise opaque surface.
The ring grants no benefit or effect from simply being worn, but instead must be removed and placed against a surface to function. When placed on a wall or similar surface, it allows the user to look through it as if there was a ring-sized hole through the wall, through up to 1 foot of wood or 6 inches of stone. Any amount of metal prevents it from functioning. If the wall is too thick, the ring will remain inert.
The peephole is an illusion, so objects cannot pass through. The ring gives off a faint aura of divination.
(Cursed Variant) As above, but when used, the ring leaves an inky black mark around the user's eye which can only be removed using Universal Solvent or a Wish spell. It also fails to show the user any creatures of any type.
Note to moderators: this is a reference to a common prank used as comedy and is in no way offensive. Just search for Eyepiece Prank.
cool idea for a game that is sneaking around and need to know whats on the other side of a door
Thanks! I've been dying to use it in a game, but haven't been very involved in a group for a while. If you get a chance to use it, feedback is welcome and appreciated! In particular, I like the idea of the cursed ring being just useful enough to the players to be worth tolerating the downsides.
What about sound? Would all sound pass through both ways, or only one way? Muffled or perfectly clear? The item seems really fun to use and I cant wait for my players to pick it up!
Haven't thought about that. Since it's meant to mimic the function of a peephole in a door, I didn't intend sound to pass through, but your campaign, your rules! I like the idea that the character might be spotted by someone with their face pressed up against a wall, muttering under their breath as they try to lip-read someone on the other side of the wall.
Nice one ! I love the idea of a more common version of the Ring of X-ray Vision. If I can make a suggestion is too bad than it can be used on metal. I like your idea on how each material reduce the power of the ring and I don't think it will break the game to have it work on metal for 2 or 3 inch. Making the ring still imcapable to look through reinforced door but very usefull to inspect mechanism (like lock). For a Rogue it could be the perfect ring to lower a DC on lockpicking or gaining advantage on a good investigation roll.
The cursed Variant is very funny but maybe the cost of breaking it is a bit high. Why not making the player roll when they use it. On a fail they have the mark for 1D4 days and if they roll a 1 their eye is blinded for 1D4 days. That way the item still have a small risk that prevent its overuse.
I hope that my suggestion were not unwelcomed. It's a good item and you can be sure that I will borrow it for a future heist one-shot.
Thanks! I more or less copied the requirements for removal of the black-eye-ring from Sovereign Glue, and I agree, as a curse for a relatively minor item, it's a bit much. Having the mark last a few days seems like long enough to let NPCs notice and embarrass the player, but not so long as to be a major change to a character. Also, inspecting the workings of a mechanism would be a creative use for the ring, and definitely should be do-able.
I do appreciate the feedback, it make creating homebrew items much more fun!
