This ornate, leather-bound tome is made from a intricately-carved, deep crimson leather that sparkles with an otherworldly incandescence. A design of beautiful silvered ivy snakes its way across the cover, betraying the incredible craftsmanship involved in the creation of this book.
Sentience. Titleholder is a sentient, chaotic neutral item with an Intelligence of 15, a Wisdom of 16, and a Charisma of 20. It has hearing and darkvision up to a range of 120 feet.
The item communicates telepathically with its wielder and can speak, read, and understand Common and Sylvan.
Personality. A chaotic Green Hag named Nightshade lives within Titleholder. The book lives to sow chaos and discord wherever it may find it. However, it is not inherently malicious. Pranks and general mischief is often enough to satiate its desires.
Titleholder has the following properties:
- While you are holding this sentient, leather-bound book, you can use it as a spellcasting focus for any spells that you would cast. You gain a +1 bonus to the attack rolls of any spell attack rolls you would make, as long as you are using the book as a focus.
- Titleholder has 6 charges for the following properties, which you can use while holding the book. The book regains any expended charges upon its wielder taking a long rest.
- As an action, you can expend 1 charge to cast Invisibility, targeting yourself.
- As an action, you can expend 2 charges to cast Pass Without Trace.
- Rend Cognomen. As a bonus action, you can expend 1 charge to force one creature you can see within 60 feet of you to make a Wisdom saving throw (DC 15). On a success, nothing happens. On a failure, you steal the creature's name, granting you 1d10 temporary hit points as you absorb the magic stored within a name. If you take another name while these hit points are active, the temporary hit points granted are added to the total temporary hit points granted by this effect. Otherwise, it is treated as a normal temporary hit points effect. In order for a creature to be affected by this ability, it must have an Intelligence score of 5 or higher. This feature has no effect on undead or constructs. The temporary hit points last for 1 minute.
- As an action, you can expend 1 charge to force a creature that you can see within 60 feet of you that has been affected by this item's Rend Cognomen feature within the last hour to make a Wisdom saving throw (DC 15). On a failure, that creature is considered to be restrained until the end of its next turn as the fey-like magic of the book binds them in place.
Attunement. When you attune to this item, you must succeed on a Charisma (Persuasion) check (DC 16) at the end of your attunement time as you attempt to persuade it to assist you. On a failure, you fail to attune to Titleholder. You may attempt to do so again after 24 hours, but the DC increases by 2 after each attempt.
Notes: Bonus: Spell Attacks, Restrained, humanoid with the ability to cast at least one spell, Utility
