Inspired by the art made by @/magical_scope on Twitter for Swordtember 2022, specifically for the Day 13 prompt "Hidden." The design belongs to @/kootooloo_tube, also on Twitter.
An ornate, but otherwise seemingly ordinary quill. It requires no ink to write, for it creates its own when the nib is touched to parchment.
Dormant
The quill grants the following benefits in its dormant state:
- The quill may be used as your spellcasting focus for any of your spells.
- Through your attunement to the quill, you are able to transform the shape of its feathered end into a blade of your choice using your bonus action. You are considered proficient with the weapon while wielding the quill in this way. The form persists for one minute, or until you choose to revert it back to its original shape.
- In the dormant state, the quill can take the form of either a dagger or a sickle.
- You gain a +1 bonus to melee attacks made with this weapon, and a +1 bonus to spell attacks to any spells casted while using it as your focus.
Additionally, you may cast Illusory Script at will without the use of material components while holding the quill in its original form.
Awakened
The quill grants the following benefits in its awakened state:
- The weapon shapes that the quill can take have expanded. You may now choose between a shortsword or a scimitar, in addition to the previous options, when transforming the quill into a weapon.
- You gain a +2 bonus to melee attacks made with this weapon, and a +2 bonus to spell attacks to any spells casted while using it as your focus.
- You may use your spellcasting modifier, instead of Strength or Dexterity, when making attack rolls with the quill.
Additionally, you may now cast Comprehend Languages once per short rest without expending a spell slot, for use only in translating texts, while holding the quill in its original form.
Exalted
The quill grants the following benefits in its exalted state:
- The weapon shapes that the quill can take have expanded. You may now choose between a rapier or a longsword, in addition to the previous options, when transforming the quill into a weapon.
- You gain a +3 bonus to melee attacks made with this weapon, and a +3 bonus to spell attacks to any spells casted while using it as your focus.
- The quill gains 3 charges, all of which are regained each day at dawn. You may expend one charge while using the quill as a weapon to deal an additional 1d8 psychic damage.
Additionally, you may now cast Borrowed Knowledge once per long rest without expending a spell slot while holding the quill in its original form
