The Shield of the Undying Dreamer is of celestial origin and serves as a prison for the Star Spawn Emissary Yogg-Shogoth, whose mortal followers revere it as a god. Over time, Yogg-Shogoth's evil has warped the shield’s appearance, causing it to take on a permanently slimy and writhing appearance
While holding this shield, you gain a +3 bonus to AC. Additionally, if the wielder's alignment is chaotic evil, the shield confers an additional +5 bonus to AC against ranged attacks, as Yogg-Shogoth's tentacles intervene to ensure its prophet of madness remains in good health.
Sentience. The Shield of the Undying Dreamer is sentient as long as it imprisons Yogg-Shogoth. While sentient, the shield has the following properties:
- The shield has an Intelligence of 27, a Wisdom of 22, and a Charisma of 25, as well as hearing and truesight out to a range of 120 feet.
- The shield can speak, read, and understand all languages other than Celestial, and it can communicate telepathically with any creature it can sense within 1,000 feet of it. Its voice is a deep, slurping whisper.
- The shield has 5 charges. You can use an action to expend 2 charges to cast phantasmal killer, 3 charges to cast black tentacles centered on yourself (you are immune from the effects of the spell, and the spell area moves with you), or 5 charges to cast feeblemindfrom the shield (save DC 23 for each). The phantasmal killer and black tentacles spells lasts for 1 minute (no concentration required). The shield regains all expended charges daily at midnight.
- Anytime during your turn, the shield can choose to radiate an aura of dread for 1 minute. (This is not a power of the shield that you control.) Any creature that starts its turn within 30 feet of the shield must make a DC 18 Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, the creature is frightened until the start of its next turn. If a creature fails their save by 5 or more, they are instead stunned. On a successful save, the creature is immune to this power of the shield for the next 24 hours. Once the shield uses this power, it can’t use it again until the next midnight.
Yogg-Shogoths Personality. Yogg-Shogoth desperately seeks freedom but can’t escape on its own. The emissary exists to warp and shatter the minds of all creatures it comes across, thereby creating a veritable garden of pure madness to bask in.
While trapped in the shield, Yogg-Shogoth carefully steers the shield’s current owner toward committing acts of chaos and horror.
Yogg-Shogoth doesn’t know how to escape from the shield. The emissary believes (incorrectly) that it can break free of the shield if it’s brought to the Far Realm, for it’s convinced that the shield’s powers are weaker there.
Freeing Yogg-Shogoth. Casting dispel evil and good on the shield has a 1 percent chance of freeing the star spawn, or automatically succeeds if the spell is cast by any creature with a challenge rating above 20. A god can release the star spawn by touching the shield and speaking Yogg-Shogoth's name. When released, Yogg-Shogoth appears in a random, unoccupied space as close to the shield as possible.
Shields require the Utilize action to Don or Doff. You gain the Armor Class benefit of a Shield only if you have training with it.
