When A humanoid creature dies within 10 ft of you while carrying the shield, you can use your reaction to absorb the spirit of the creature. The creature's name is then carved onto the face of the shield for a maximum of 10 names.
When you take damage you may use your reaction to call forth any number of spirits named on the shield and reduce the damage by the number of names released +1. Alternatively you can use a the spell speak with dead on one of the names, without needing the body. After using either of the effects the name disappears from the shield and the spirit is gone.
Cursed: If you die holding the shield, your spirit is trapped within the shield and your name is carved on it from the moment you attune to it, you can not be resurrected in any way unless the shield is cleaned with a Greater Restoration spell.
Shields require the Utilize action to Don or Doff. You gain the Armor Class benefit of a Shield only if you have training with it.
