Weapon (shortbow), uncommon (requires attunement by a Fighter)

The Windcaller is a masterfully crafted shortbow, a collaboration between skilled dwarven smiths and inventive gnomish tinkerers. The bow is made from a rare, lightweight black horn, giving the bowstring a sleek, silver-blue sheen that contrasts with the intricately carved wooden grip. The arms of the bow are etched with fine dwarven runes, while delicate gnomish mechanisms are embedded near the nocks. When drawn, the string hums softly as if pulling at the air, and faint gusts of wind swirl around the wielder.

  • Whispering Arrows: The Windcaller magically reduces the sound of its arrows. While using this bow, any ranged attacks made with it are done so in silence, and the wielder has an advantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks when making ranged attacks from hiding or attempting to remain unseen.

  • Wind's Guidance: The Windcaller has three charges. As a bonus action, the wielder can expend one charge to gain an advantage on their next ranged attack, as the winds seem to subtly guide the arrow. The bow regains 1d3 expended charges daily at dawn.

  • Gust Strike: Once per short rest, the wielder can unleash a concentrated burst of wind with their shot. When firing an arrow from the Windcaller, they can choose to activate Gust Strike, causing the shot to release a forceful gust of wind in a 10-foot wide, 30-foot-long line behind the arrow. Creatures in the line must succeed on a DC 13 Strength saving throw or be pushed back 10 feet and knocked prone.

The Windcaller was forged deep within the Ironhalls, a renowned dwarven city built into the mountains. There, the dwarves mastered metallurgy while their gnomish allies perfected the intricate mechanical enhancements that made this bow unique. The weapon was initially commissioned by a dwarven noble who wished to give his elven allies a gift worthy of their skills with the bow, but the Windcaller quickly became prized by warriors and scouts of all races.

The collaborative nature of its creation meant that the bow was designed not just for precision but to harness the winds' power. Some say that the winds of the high peaks and underground caverns were bound into the bow during its forging, allowing it to call upon air currents to guide its arrows and protect its wielder.
