Weapon: Wraps of Self-Flagellation

Weapon Type: Monk Weapon (Unarmed Strikes, Wrappings)
Rarity: Legendary (requires attunement by a Monk or similar class)

Description:
The Wraps of Self-Flagellation are relics of unparalleled power, forged in ancient times by an order of monks who sought transcendence through pain and reflection. These bindings fuse with the wearer's body and soul, transforming their suffering into devastating force and unyielding resilience. The wraps' true strength is unlocked only by those who have endured profound loss and who wield their pain as a weapon against injustice.

Weapon Properties

Unarmed Strikes Enhancement

  • Your unarmed strikes count as magical for overcoming resistance and immunity to nonmagical attacks and damage.
  • Your unarmed strikes deal an additional 2d6 psychic damage.
  • Critical hits with your unarmed strikes deal an additional 2d10 radiant damage as the wraps surge with energy, punishing those who stand against your purpose.

Legendary Features

Channel the Pain (Recharge: Short or Long Rest)

As a bonus action, you can willingly take 2d8 psychic damage to activate the wraps’ full potential for 1 minute. While active, you gain the following benefits:

  • Enhanced Strikes: Your unarmed strikes deal an additional 2d8 psychic damage (in addition to the base damage).
  • Penance Shield: Gain resistance to all damage except force and psychic damage.
  • Aura of Suffering: Any creature within 15 feet of you that damages you takes your Wisdom modifier + 1d8 psychic damage in retaliation.

Transcendent Clarity (Recharge: Long Rest)

As an action, you can focus your suffering into an overwhelming surge of spiritual power, entering a state of heightened clarity for 1 minute. During this state:

  • You gain immunity to psychic damage and cannot be charmed, frightened, or paralyzed.
  • You can take two reactions per round.
  • Your unarmed strikes critically hit on rolls of 19-20.
  • When you hit a creature with an unarmed strike, you can push it up to 10 feet away from you (no save).

When this effect ends, you suffer 3 levels of exhaustion unless you succeed on a DC 16 Constitution saving throw, reducing the exhaustion by 1 level per success.

Suffering’s Reprisal

When a creature within 30 feet deals damage to you, you can use your reaction to unleash a psychic backlash. The creature must make a Wisdom saving throw (DC = 8 + your Proficiency Bonus + your Wisdom modifier) or take 4d10 psychic damage and be stunned until the end of their next turn. On a success, the creature takes half damage and is not stunned.

You can use this ability three times per long rest.

Harmony of Pain and Purpose (Ultimate Feature)

Once per long rest, when you are reduced to 0 hit points, the wraps flare with radiant energy, keeping you standing. You regain hit points equal to half your maximum HP and immediately gain the benefits of the Transcendent Clarity feature without expending a charge.

During this state, you cannot be reduced below 1 hit point until the effect ends. When the state ends, you automatically suffer 4 levels of exhaustion.

Cursed Nature

The Wraps of Self-Flagellation bind to the wearer’s soul. Once attuned, they cannot be removed unless the wearer achieves a monumental act of atonement or self-forgiveness. If forcibly removed, the wearer takes 8d12 psychic damage and suffers the effects of the feeblemind spell, which can only be cured by a wish spell or divine intervention.

Lore:

These wraps were crafted by the Penance Forgemasters, an ancient monastic order that believed suffering was the path to enlightenment. The greatest monks of the order bound their essence into these relics, creating weapons of ultimate power—but at a cost. The wraps amplify the wielder’s pain, forcing them to confront their deepest guilt and resolve it to harness the full might of the artifact.

Legends say the wraps are drawn to those whose hearts are burdened by profound loss, and they seek not just to empower but to transform their wearer into a paragon of balance and justice.

Notes: Damage: Psychic, requires attunement by a Monk or similar class
