An item lost to time, Volo's Magic Compass was used by the fabled explorer Volothamp Geddarm. On one of his journeys, Volo lost this item and many others when he was forced to take flight from a mind flayer colony while doing research for one of his written works, "Volo's Guide to Monsters."
When pressed flat, this item is about the size of a large coin. It is made up of two circular pieces of metal and a flat disc in the center. The inner circle is connected to the outer circle by two pegs set in a channel that runs the interior of the outer circle, which allows it to free-spin and free-turn within the outer circle. The central disc is connected to the inner circle in a similar manner. The central disc has a circle of runes near its outer edge on the top and bottom. Inside the circle of runes, etched circular patterns surround a single clear diamond. The diamond is set closer to one side of the disc.
When the command word is spoken, the inner circle and disc spin to point in three-dimensional space towards the nearest or most powerful magical object that is 30 ft or closer to the compass. The compass can detect magic items through any barrier. This effect lasts for 1 minute and only has one charge that resets at sunrise.
