You could choose a background that offers up at least 10gp :) ... some of them offer up to 25gp.
I switched from Hermit to Archaeologist and just adjusted the flair a little bit for my character. The DM let me spend 10 of my 25gp in the beginning so I could start the game with my familiar.
Unfortunately, now I'm in a conundrum in that this group is still insisting on handing out gold rewards each session and basically ignoring the Season 8 rules they don't like. Or they're just being willfully ignorant of the recent changes. I can't really tell and was kind of waved off when I casually brought it up. I'm probably going to have to keep an "official" and an "unofficial" logsheet now.
That's what I was afraid of. Unfortunately they seem dead set and I don't want to be "that guy" to a bunch of people I just met and hope to keep gaming with. It's a new group at a new store and I don't want to ruffle feathers.
I'll probably keep an "official" and an "unofficial" logsheet so I can be legal if I take the character to other stores or cons.
Okay, so I had my first game of Adventurer's League last night. As a lead-up, I've been reading everything I can get my eyes on over the last week so that I wouldn't be too far behind the other players. I read all the Season 8 rewards information, built my character using the ALPG, etc. I thought I was good to go and went off to the game.
However, while I'm there it quickly seems like no one has actually read the Season 8 changes outside of a few online discussion threads. They're all saying that don't like it, but actually seem to know why. It's very strange, but everyone is speaking like an expert on the matter as they've been playing for several seasons.
Whatever, I just want to play.
But then at the end of the session (playing Dragon Heist), the DM awards everyone 141 gold pieces, which I found very confusing based on what I've read. I brought it up and was just told I was wrong and confused.
Does the Dragon Heist module have some exceptions to the GP rule that I'm not aware of?
If they're doing it wrong, they're definitely not going to listen to the new guy about fixing it and I don't feel like getting into drama in my first game.
They seem to be doing treasure points and advancement points correctly, but not the gold. I would like to use this character at other stores or at cons eventually, so should I keep a separate character sheet with the more accurate gold information? As a new player I'm really confused about all of this and no one seems to have the whole picture.
I'm joining my first 5E game by jumping into an Adventurer's League session at my FLGS this Friday.
In preparation, I created a forest gnome mage with the hermit background. I also took Find Familiar as one of my 1st level spells because I liked the idea of a forest gnome having a "pet" to talk to, etc, and it's also just a really good spell.
However, after looking over some of the recent discussions on treasure and gold in the Adventurer's League, I'm not sure if this character would be worth it over multiple sessions. First off, it doesn't look like I'll even be able to cast Find Familiar until level 2, since I won't get the 10gp I need until I level up, and then I'll be very limited with how much I can use the familiar because of that component cost. On top of that, it looks like every gold I earn will end up going towards spell components and spellbook costs for the foreseeable future.
Am I missing something, or should I roll up a different hero before my first session this Friday? Should I just ditch Find Familiar entirely and find something else I like?
