Abduct. The bugbear needn’t spend extra movement to move a creature it is grappling.
Actions
Grab. Melee Attack Roll: +4, reach 10 ft. Hit: 9 (2d6 + 2) Bludgeoning damage. If the target is a Medium or smaller creature, it has the Grappled condition (escape DC 12).
Light Hammer. Melee or Ranged Attack Roll: +4 (with Advantage if the target is Grappled by the bugbear), reach 10 ft. or range 20/60 ft. Hit: 9 (3d4 + 2) Bludgeoning damage.
This feels strange to me. Both closer to the player bugbear race and further away.
Why does a player Bugbear get Surprise Attack when the monster seemingly does not? Why powerful build? Sneaky?
And why is the monster a fey while the PC only has fey ancestry?
I'd rather the PCs and the monsters at least have abilities that do similar things even if they're different for balance reasons. Something like "Flexible Build. The Bugbear counts as one size larger when determining its carrying capacity, and can move through spaces large enough for a creature one size smaller than itself without squeezing."
At least they both have the same reach and darkvision I guess.
Well this is for 2024 rules, so I don't think any comparison can be made to the player species which doesn't exist within 2024 rules yet.
Backwards compatibility means it's all 2024 rules until it gets replaced. Monsters of the Multiverse was also specifically designed with this rules revision in mind. So unless they plan to rerelease their rerelease, in which they make Bugbears fey with 10 feet of reach and nothing else, my complaints stand.
So, with Bugbears and I assume other goblinoids being reclassified as Fey, does that mean they can no longer be affacted by the Hold Person spell?
Even the 2024 version states HUMANOID targets.
Correct. Although based on Hobgoblins in Monsters of the Multiverse, the player characters will be humanoids with the Fey Ancestry trait, and the monsters will have the Fey creature type and be unaffected by "Blah Person" spells.
Very possible with the monster manual coming out, compatible with rules doesn't mean the same and we already knew that stat blocks were going to be different for creatures.
This is barely a CR 1/2, should be CR 1/4 but no where near a CR 1.
I can't image Monsters of the Multivers was specifically designed with rule revisions in mind considering it was out a year or more before playtesting even began. Your complaints are valid, and because they can't really make money selling backwards compatibility I expect there will be updates to players species in a new book. "Player's Guide to Faerun" I suspect will have updates to all the species and Artificer class.
So, I hope intellect devourers can inhabit fey now. :)
One of the few artworks where i like the old one more.
This bugbear forgot his shield too so -2 AC but at least he got 6 av. Hp.
He cant grapple as ba but his try makes dmg and is an attackroll so its prob easier specially against squishys.
He also forgot his javelin so no ranged attack for this one.
Overall seems a bit weaker but still a fine monster
One thing no one questioned is why the weapon dices are doubled or tripled for this creature when it doesn't have any feature like "Brute" that used to double the weapon dice of attacks.
