Traits
Amphibious. The bullywug can breathe air and water.
Speak with Frogs and Toads. The bullywug can communicate simple concepts to frogs and toads when it speaks in Bullywug.
Actions
Insectile Rapier. Melee Attack Roll: +4, reach 5 ft. Hit: 6 (1d8 + 2) Piercing damage plus 2 (1d4) Poison damage.
Bonus Actions
Leap. The bullywug can jump up to 30 feet by spending 10 feet of movement.
These seem innocent, but they are quite insane for CR 1/4 creatures. AC 15 and 8 expected damage is far above the curve. 11 HP can often survive one hit.
I love and hate the artwork at the same time.
Someone pointed out to me IRL that the wig looks like cat tails. But I think it looks like hotdogs on sticks.
Can a PC loot the body of this monster and a claim an insectile rapier that deals an extra 1d4 poison damage? or is this too powerful for a starter game?
For real
I liked the old art but this one is just funny.
Got +1 to initiative cause his dex incresed by 2 and 10 walking speed but lost 10 swimm speed. Fair trait in my opinion cause the walking speed is more useful in general. Stealth got better cause of better dex aswell.
Leap is now a bonusaction and the camouflage is now dm decision i guess.
Attack hit better after dex improvement but it only has one attack now and no ranged option which is a bit sad. The melee hits harder for that with an average of 8 dmg instead of 3.
Overall one of the few monsters were i prefer the old one.
The general intent is no, weapons like this are usually considered part of the monster's stat block and not usable items.
Of course, that interpretation is lame, like most 'designer-focused' decisions that focus on mechanics and not at all on what's cool. Frankly, I don't see much of a balance issue with a mildly poisonous weapon in player hands.
