Spellcasting. The bullywug casts one of the following spells, using Wisdom as the spellcasting ability (spell save DC 13, +5 to hit with spell attacks):
At Will: Dancing Lights, Druidcraft, Ray of Sickness
1/Day Each: Speak with Plants, Vitriolic Sphere
Bonus Actions
Leap. The bullywug can jump up to 30 feet by spending 10 feet of movement.
Why would it ever cast ray of sickness for 13 damage when it deals 34 with its basic melee attack? And why is the staff using dex to hit?
Giving casters some useful melee option is fine, but making them better than the spells is ridiculous.
Because it's ranged and can put poisoned condition on creature. So when it gets within melee the defending creature has disadvantage on it's attacks.
The staff is clearly superior, but it is a melee weapon, and the bullywug has some tricks to get it out of melee range and stay out. Against players who only have melee weapons, this thing is just cheating. I approve.
So ray of sickness is better if there's absolutely no enemy with any ranged attacks. Which sure is likely against a group of 4-6 adventurers.
Bog Staff. Melee Attack Roll: +5, reach 5 ft. Hit: 7 (1d8 + 3) Bludgeoning damage plus 10 (3d6) Poison damage.
Would this be considered a regular quarterstaff that has had poison applied to it? or is this a magical weapon that deals extra Poison damage?
How would this rate as loot for the PC team? or do monster weapons stronger than common or even available weapons just dissolve when the monster dies?
If its a contact poison and not a magic weapon, the party should find vials of poison on the body if they slay him quickly. Is giving vials of Poison that add 3d6 Poison damage to your physical weapon attacks broken? How long would a single application of the poison last?
I love that they kept their own art style!
Statwise i am happy with this one. He will never be alone so a few bullywug warrior or knights to protect him while he casts ray of sickness or vitriolic sphere to support.
Where are you getting 13 and 34 damage from?
The staff does an average of 17 damage on a hit, and Ray of Sickness does 9 plus poisons the target.
If I were running these guys, I'd have them sit in the back & shoot Rays of Sickness at the party while their Bullywug Warrior allies fight more safely. It's a support caster with a nasty melee option, but not much more reason to put itself in danger.
