This page is gonna be so popular. There will be so many dead goblins in the future.
So just the 2014 Goblin with no cloths and a only a knife. I guess its MCDM for actual minion rules.
Why fey? Why this CR 1/8 is as strong than was the basic cr 1/4 goblin? Why not evil but neutral? Why? I am really getting TIRED of 2024 stat blocks...
A year or so ago, I advised dms who were worried about tpking players during the first battle in LMOP to have two-four goblins to have no armour and only be equipped with a club/dagger. Seems WotC had a similar idea.
Because goblins are fey creatures. It's weaker than the old 1/4 goblin in every measure except HP where it stays at 7. Because goblins are not inheriently evil. You can always make them evil or give them a different origin, that's cool, but like honestly?
And so, tell me why they are fey and not inherently evil while they always been both humanoid and chaotic evil till now in dnd lore? I was not playing them as "evil you cant resonate", but those always have been peasky dangerous pest that are some kind of humanoid, leave the fey part for the niblog.
Even from a mechanic points of view its a disaster, humanoid targeting only spell becoming useless and extraplanars targeting spells mandatory.... and way less likely to turn them into a playable race (why gonlin npc would be fey and player npc humanoid?) And believe me, we beta tested all the new goblins and everyon was just raging cause the combat was taking forever cause all of them had so many hp for their cr!
Read the very page you're on for answers to your question.
You mean the lore that they just invented for this new version of the goblin and is clearly not older version compatible?
Yeah no, sorry. And except the fact that they are feys now, that does not explains anything... and if it emphasize their chaotic shenigans, thats also clearly more evil than neutral
I feel as if you are just wrong.
Bro VersusChoas I mean, you don't have to complain about it, and you can just go use the old ones, honestly. This, I will say, is a very fixed mindset on goblins. I believe being Chaotic Neutral makes plenty of sense for goblins, same with their fey typing. Now, here is my rant on why. Way back when, goblins were in mythology known as fae (Fey) and tricksy. Now, for their alignment, they are Chaotic Neutral, which ties in well with their deceptive and tricksy nature, similar to some fey creatures. They prioritize their self-freedom and independence, and don't lean inherently on good or evil. They don't like following any strict moral codes (which is pretty true across older editions), and this means they're unpredictable. You should never look at alignment and believe that is the basis for how that monster should be run but more or less how they might act and what they were/are known for besides being strictly evil or good: For example not all orcs are evil and might be relative to a human. " while they have always been both humanoid and chaotic evil till now in dnd lore?" This is wrong, they were Neutral Evil before, and the race thing didn't come until 3e/3.5, they were just described as humanoid looking, but were just said to be goblinoid. That was one of the 2014 5e things. "And believe me, we beta tested all the new goblins and everyone was just raging cause the combat was taking forever cause all of them had so much hp for their class!" Lol no the Goblin Warrior cr is following the newly and well constructed Cr stat block making system it's just a slightly tougher version of the goblin stat block and these Goblin Minions run fine their just 5e Goblins but with Fey and a couple less damage and AC, the Goblin Hexer is cr 3 for god's sake 45 hp is nothing, and the Goblin Boss has the same hp, shiver me timbers bro. Sure, some spells don't work on these guys any more, but that's okay, players might just have to use new spells, or some spells might work on them now instead, and even then, none of these are mandatory last time I checked this guy ain't immune to any damage types. When it comes to lore, the Fey-related stuff might have come out of left field, but it still fits. Their god was already oppressive, and it shows he took and used them outside of the Fey to go fight in his endless war. It makes sense because Fey monsters are often tricky and morally grey, and these guys are as well. It still states Hobgoblins boss them around, still states they can be savage, they just do it now for a slightly different reason. Plus, if you wanna run your goblins as humanoids, you can still do that, no one is forcing it down your throat, but you don't state yourself how being Fey wouldn't make sense or why they are poor mechanically you just said a couple wrong things and that they had to much HP. Kobolds used to be rat people and now they are little dragon people, Gnolls went from Hyena people to Wolf people back to Hyena people but now they are truly connected with their demon origins because now they are fiends, Orcs used to look like they had pig snouts and Tieflings were added in 3e but no one complained about those additions or the changes from those (but now they are an official playable race with more culture besides raid). Another thing for the Nilbog in its lore it states that goblins had a secret or lost Fey god from their origins so why should they not be Fey it just ties them back to that. "and if it emphasizes their chaotic shenanigans, that's also clearly more evil than neutral" You know people, animals, and creatures can be a lot or chaotic to deal with but still good or emotionally neutral still right? I saw your complaint on the Goblin Warrior and many other stat blocks. Were you just moping, but the extra 1d4 on advantage is supposed to represent their Fury of the Small trait, which is clever, and this slightly teaches Dm's on how these guys might be more of skirmishers and ambushers instead of brutes. And if you think those guys are too strong, that's why this stat block exists. They also only get it with advantage, which only their Hide action can give, and they still need to pass a stealth check, and if they are in broad daylight, they ain't gonna be doing that. This might sound attacking, and this entire message might sound attacking, but it's just how I view your points.
Yes! Lore can change, and this isn't even really a change, it's just aligning the stat block more closely with the lore.
I think the change to chaotic neutral fey is interesting. I know that in Greyhawk or Forgotten Realms they are neutral evil or lawful evil, and in both cases they are mundane creatures. I haven't researched the new fluff but having them come from the Feywild is interesting. They are less like the classic evil goblins we've seen since the first editions of dnd, these are like much older folk tales where goblins steal odd socks and snuff out your candles as a prank. It's quite the shift, and while I think old folk tales are lovely sources of inspiration, I wonder how they would play out in a dungeon.
