Goblin Ambush Shocks Travelers on Triboar Trail
What’s Behind Surge in Hostile Encounters?
Ches 25, Phandalin – Ambushed wagons, dead travelers, and a town looking for answers.
“I was supposed to receive a shipment of equipment last week,” says Linene Graywind, owner of Lionshield Coster in Phandalin, “These provisions are crucial to keep things running smoothly in town.”
These goblin attacks are a grim reminder of the events that occurred 500 years ago when a band of marauders destroyed the city after battling over Wave Echo Cave.
“Who’s going to stop these attacks?” said one townsfolk who asked to remain anonymous. “What is Townmaster Wester going to do to keep us safe?”

Redbrands' Reign of Terror
A group of bandits called the Redbrands have set up shop in Tresendar Manor at the edge of town.
“They’re getting bolder and shaking down local businesses,” said Freda, a gnome resident of Phandalin. “The only one they haven’t tried to hassle is Mrs. Thornton’s Miner’s Exchange. I think they’re scared of her.”
Emboldened by a lack of resistance from Townmaster Wester, the Redbrands have quickly tightened their grasp on Phandalin. “They murdered Thel–our local woodcarver,” said Toblen, the innkeeper of the Stonehill Inn. “He tried to run them off after they threatened his shop, and now his wife, daughter, and son have gone missing.”
What’s in This Issue of the Phandalin Post?
This issue of the Phandalin Post covers the conflicts the players will face in the first two chapters of the adventure. It serves as an excellent tool to hand your players before their first session.
Goblins on Triboar Trail. The excerpt on goblin attacks should warn the party that there are dangers on the Triboar Trail, which will allow them to prepare contingencies in case they are attacked. These preparations will pay off during the "Goblin Ambush" encounter in Chapter 1.
Redbrands in Phandalin. The section detailing how the Redbrands have overrun Phandalin is a good way to establish the threat of the ruffians to your players in Chapter 2. Just in case they don’t go to Stonehill Inn, where rumors of the Redbrands are discussed by townsfolk, they can still hear that businesses are being hassled, and the Redbrands have gone so far as to murder one of the townsfolk.
These articles also make it clear that Townminster Weston hasn’t been of any help with the issues that the town is facing, so the players shouldn’t expect any formalized support with these challenges.

What a great way to play by mail, in the modern era. Stuff like this would have thrilled me 40yrs ago. Brilliant.
Of course the original content was more exclusively 'Fantasy Medieval', but in part that's because you can't print a book about every theme or genre. OFC it can be Steampunk, or X1 Isle of Dread mundane. The original DM's Guide has information and context to translate our medium into Star Frontiers, Gamma World, Boot Hill, along with modules like Barrier Peaks with a full on spaceship in it, with powered weapons. And that's the beauty of it as well, D&D can be anything.
~Dream on! for you GG..
This is such a huge spoiler for so many things players are supposed to find out, jesus... I know, I know: Old adventure. But new players.
This is very disappointing on many levels (not least the troope of non entity hype geeks you trapse out to sell us stuff).
I don't think shoe-horning the modern world into a medieval fantasy setting is the way to go
I've been DMing my players on the Sword Coast for a while, they have already done this stuff lol
Firearms are okay, but a printed newspaper isn't?!? Just don't use it. Simple.
Good to see small town newspapers are still supported on the Sword Coast.
If I were to give this to my players as part of a plot hook, would it include too many spoilers?
It depends. Do you want to make a big deal of discovery and exploration? What about mystery? Do you want your players to discover what is going on in Phandalin and what happened naturally? If so, absolutely do not use this. For Spoilers...
Minor:
- Whom the weapons found in the Cragmaw Hideout belong to.
- The attitude of Harbin Wester
- That people got seriously hurt / killed by the Redbrands (Thel)
Major:
- Where the Redbrands are hiding (gotta talk to people in Phandalin for that)
Whole Campaign:
- Lost Mine = Wave Echo Cave, attacked 500 years ago (found out at the end of the Redbrand Hideout, end of Act 2)
If you give that to your players and want to avoid spoilers, I suggest they find it at the Stonehill Inn when looking for leads where the redbrands are hiding and did not consider people like Daran, Quelline / Carp or Halia.
You forgot to mention the TRAINS[!!!] that are a completely acceptable part of this "medieval fantasy setting". And the way that there's bewitched elementals to provide you with hot and cold running water whenever you want it. And, etc... etc... etc... In fact, I don't think 5e even has a medieval fantasy setting anymore! (lol)
This stuff makes me excited and annoy my brother about adding this to the campaign.
I mean, there have been tons of books in print in DnD lore, not to mention the Deck of many Things, which definitely has color. Try not to compare this with Earths timeline of inventions and you are good.
I'd love more of these, like one for each chapter. It would be great for keeping players in the story and presenting them with all the plot going on while in world.
its pretty cool ngl
