Druid 201: The Best Magic Items for Druids

As a Druid, you draw your strength from the natural world, channeling ancient power through traditions passed down over centuries—or freshly unearthed in the world's wild and forgotten corners.

Some Druids call on this magic to take the form of beasts and soar, stalk, or swim through adventures. Others wield it to command the elements, nurture life, or unravel the secrets of stone and root.

The Dungeon Master's Guide offers a trove of magic items perfectly suited to these reverent nature warriors—and in this article, we'll explore some options that are sure to send Druids over the moon!

The Best Magic Items for Your Druid Are Up to You!

In D&D, we tell stories about unique characters with individual personalities and goals, and we, as players, have our own preferred playstyles. What's best for your character is for you to decide!

An item might make this list because it's fun, practical, or is simply a great opportunity to be creative, but there are tons of items out there that your character might want to use instead.

Items That Are a Natural Fit for Your Druid

Elven Chain

1. Elven Chain

Armor (Chain Mail or Chain Shirt), Rare

Normally, Druids only have armor training with Light armor and Shields, which limits their options to improve their Armor Class. Elven Chain is perfect for a Druid because it considers the wearer trained with the armor even if they lack training with Medium or Heavy armor.

This allows Druids to boost their AC to 17 with the Chain Mail option or 14 + Dex modifier (max 2) with the Chain Shirt option. Keep in mind that the Druid will still need a minimum Strength score of 13 to wear the Chain Mail without having their speed reduced by 10 feet.

The Chain Mail also still gives Disadvantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks, but Druids have a unique way of being able to deal with this: You can choose to merge it into your new form when you Wild Shape!

Heward's Handy Haversack

2. Heward's Handy Haversack

Wondrous Item, Rare

Whether it's gathering herbs to use with their Herbalism Kit, collecting Material components for their spells, or storing an ever-growing collection of potions, Druids often end up with an entire apothecary's worth of oddities. Self-reliance can get heavy!

But if the Druid doesn't want to end up the Mule of the party—figuratively or literally—then Heward's Handy Haversack is perfect.

This magical sack consists of multiple extradimensional spaces that exist within its various pockets, allowing it to contain up to 900 pounds of materials without ever weighing more than 5 pounds. To retrieve an item from the sack, it takes a Utilize action or a Bonus Action, but the desired item is magically always on top of the contents.

Bag of Tricks

3. Bag of Tricks

Wondrous Item, Uncommon

There are few things that say Druid louder than a retinue of furry friends immediately at your disposal.

The Bag of Tricks is a satchel that always seems to contain strange, fuzzy objects. When you take a Magic action to pluck one of these fuzzy oddities from the bag and throw it, it transforms into a random animal when it lands. The type of animal depends on the color of the bag—gray, rust, or tan—and can include anything from Apes to Weasels—even Lions and Tigers and Brown Bears (oh my!)

Not only is the summoned animal Friendly to you and obeys your commands, but the bag can never run out of critters! You can use it three times per day, and the bag regains all of its uses at the next dawn.

Necklace of Prayer Beads

4. Necklace of Prayer Beads

Wondrous Item, Rare (Requires Attunement by a Cleric, Druid, or Paladin)

The Necklace of Prayer Beads is a string of randomly assorted magical and non-magical beads. The magical beads contain various spells that the attuned wearer of the necklace can cast without having to prepare the spells or expend a spell slot.

The spells can include Bless, Cure Wounds (level 2 version), and Wind Walk to name a few, all handy options for a Druid to have on hand especially since they each can be cast from the bead as a Bonus Action—but remember you'll have to wait until the next dawn to cast the spell from the bead again.

Pipes of the Sewers

5. Pipes of the Sewers

Wondrous Item, Uncommon (Requires Attunement)

Another entry in the list of “items that let the Druid be a walking zoo” is the Pipes of the Sewers. This set of pipes makes Rats, including their larger kin; Giant Rats, Indifferent to the wielder and won't attack unless threatened.

Additionally, the wielder can play the pipes as a Magic action and take a Bonus Action to expend 1 to 3 charges to summon forth a Swarm of Rats for each expended charge. Keep in mind, there must be enough rats within half a mile to make a swarm (determined by the DM).

But the rodent revelry doesn't end there, for if a Swarm of Rats not controlled by another creature comes within 30 feet of you while playing the pipes, there is a chance they will be swayed by the pipe's magic and become Friendly to you as long as you play the pipes. Any Druid who spends their time in civilization will find this to be a very useful item, as they'll likely be able to summon some furry minions at a whim.

Quaal's Feather Token (Tree)

6. Quaal's Feather Token (Tree)

Wondrous Item, Uncommon

Quaal's Feather Token (Tree) allows the wielder to summon a nonmagical oak tree into existence by using a Magic action and touching an unoccupied space on the ground while outside. This has a variety of uses; you could use it for instant cover, to help scale a wall, or if you want to start building a tree house without having to wait 20 years.

This item also synergizes with the Tree Stride or Transport via Plants spells. Being able to instantly summon an oak tree in an empty space makes these somewhat limited transportation spells far more flexible.

Remember, this is a one-time use item, so make sure your expedited tree planting is worthwhile!

Staff of Swarming Insects

7. Staff of Swarming Insects

Staff, Rare (Requires Attunement by a Bard, Cleric, Druid, Sorcerer, Warlock, or Wizard)

Once again, we're gathering a veritable menagerie of minions, this time something creepy and/or crawly with the Staff of Swarming Insects.

The staff has a number of charges that can be used to summon various insect-related effects. The attuned wielder can take a Magic action to cause a harmless cloud of bugs to surround them, obscuring them from attacks, or expend multiple charges to cast the Giant Insect or Insect Plague spells. Even if your Druid player already has access to these spells, having additional castings via a magic item can free up spell slots, giving them more endurance through the adventuring day.

Staff of the Adder

8. Staff of the Adder

Staff, Uncommon (Requires Attunement)

Another animal-themed staff, but this one is a little different. Rather than summoning an animal, the Staff of the Adder allows the attuned wielder to animate the head of this staff into that of a venomous snake as a Bonus Action.

When the staff's head is animated and the wielder takes the Attack action, they can make one of the attack rolls with the snake's head. What makes this perfect for Druids is you add your Proficiency Bonus and Wisdom modifier to the attack roll.

On a hit, it deals a combination of Piercing and Poison damage to the target, giving a Druid an additional melee option in combat, while also having the special kind of fabulousness that only comes with wielding a (sort of) live snake!

Tome of Understanding

9. Tome of Understanding

Wondrous Item, Very Rare

Wisdom is likely the primary ability of any Druid, and the Tome of Understanding is perfect for augmenting that. If the holder studies the book for 48 hours over the course of 6 days or fewer, their Wisdom score increases by 2, and the book loses its magic. A simple but effective item.

It's also worth noting that the book regains its magic after a century, which isn't that long to an archdruid who ages ten times slower than usual.

Wand of Polymorph

10. Wand of Polymorph

Wand, Very Rare (Requires Attunement by a Spellcaster)

Why should the Druid be the only one to enjoy a walk on the shape-shifted side? With the Wand of Polymorph, a Druid can transform their allies—or potentially their adversaries—into bestial forms using the Polymorph spell. Casting Polymorph from the wand expends 1 charge, and the wand regains 1d6 + 1 charges daily at dawn, so that could mean a lot of Polymorphing for every situation!

Careful—it might crumble to ash and be destroyed if you expend the wand's last charge.

Items That Summon Flavor

This list of items wouldn't be complete without a little spice, so here are four items that are more on the fun and flavorful side of things. While not the most powerful items, they are sure to bring a smile to any Druid's face.

Hat of Vermin

Hat of Vermin

Wondrous Item, Common

The Hat of Vermin allows you to summon a Bat, Frog, or Rat 3 times a day. However, be warned, these critters are not under your control and once summoned inside the hat, will immediately try to escape.

Perfect for causing a little bit of druidic mayhem.

Pot of Awakening

Pot of Awakening

Wondrous Item, Common

There's been a lot of focus on fauna so far, but what about those Druids with a green thumb? Well, the Pot of Awakening is a perfect item for the horticulturally inclined Druid. If you plant any ordinary shrub within this clay pot and allow it to grow for 30 days, it'll magically transform into an Awakened Shrub that's Friendly towards you.

Now your Druid can have their own little floral friend to follow them about!

Staff of Flowers

Staff of Birdcalls/Staff of Flowers

Staff, Common

Sometimes a Druid might miss the sights, sounds, and smells of home and long for some of those natural comforts, which is where these two Common staffs come in.

Each staff has 10 charges, and you can expend a charge when you take the Magic action to produce the staff's effect. The Staff of Birdcalls produces the sound of a variety of birds, from ravens to finches to even a goose or a turkey! On the other hand, the Staff of Flowers can cause a patch of ground to spontaneously sprout a flower, either one of your choice or a mild scented daisy.
