In a private press panel earlier this week, D&D Principal Story Designer Chris Perkins sat down three authors on Candlekeep Mysteries, the first new D&D book of 2021, to talk about some of the cool new adventures we’ll see within its pages. For more information on Candlekeep Mysteries, see Candlekeep Mysteries Unveiled! Everything We Know About the New D&D Book.
Taymoor Rehman is a skilled D&D designer, Wizards of the Coast’s newest member of the D&D design team, and an author of one of the 17 one-shot adventures found within Candlekeep Mysteries, D&D’s newest adventure anthology book. His adventure is titled “Zikran’s Zephyrean Tome.” Here’s everything we know about his adventure, and how it can turn your campaign upside-down in the best possible way.
It All Starts with a Book
Like all of the other adventures in Candlekeep Mysteries, “Zikran’s Zephyrean Tome” is a mystery adventure that all starts with a book. In fact, this book is special—it contains its adventure entirely within its pages, for this book is the eponymous zephyrean tome of the sinister Zikran. In order to gain access to Candlekeep library, one must present at the gates a unique tome not present within the library’s manifold archives, and this book is quite unique indeed. Within it is trapped a mighty djinni, sealed there by his former master. He seeks the characters’ aid in freeing him…and that’s where the real fun begins.
Wishful Thinking
To be assured, some wild hijinx ensue as the characters attempt to solve the mystery of Zikran’s djinni-imprisoning libram, though Taymoor and the D&D team weren’t ready to reveal the full extent of this adventure’s secrets in a simple teaser. What he did reveal with great pride, is that the djinni entrapped within the tome is truly grateful to get out, and offers the characters a reward. Chris Perkins proudly said that he loves it when D&D storytellers find ways to reward the characters in ways other than gold, and that Taymoor’s rewards lived up to his expectations. Can you guess what it is?
Of course, the heroes’ reward for saving the djinni is none other than one wish. Imagine, what would you do with the power of a djinni’s unlimited wish at your fingertips? The sky’s the limit—nay, even the Elemental Plane of Air isn’t the limit! And yet, if you have the wherewithal to pass up a single wish, you could even gain the djinni’s loyal assistance as you go on further adventures. One wish may be grand, but if you’re a party of adventurers who foresees a long, thrilling, and lucrative career of adventuring ahead of you, perhaps the loyal aid of a magical friend who owes you their life is better than one measly wish.
The choice is yours, of course.
Short and Snappy
And, just like all of the adventures in Candlekeep Mysteries, “Zikran's Zephyrean Tome” is a short adventure about 10 to 12 pages long, and designed to be played in just a single session. This one-shot format is great for throwing together a casual weeknight game session, for playing at conventions (whenever those return, once we’re all vaccinated against COVID), or for adapting into the ongoing story of your current campaign.
You can preorder Candlekeep Mysteries on the D&D Beyond Marketplace today! You’ll get special goodies for preording, and instantly get access to the book when it releases on March 16th, 2021.

this sounds really neat i bet my players will honestly probably not take the wish because they are the type of people that try to get as many hirelings and pets and just about anything that can fight so having a djinn head the charge to a bank heist or war or the bbeg sounds really fun and can make for cool encounters
What level of characters is this adventure built for? Also, I'm taking the wish. What good is one djinn when you can have a army of 100?
This sounds awesome! I'm incorporating a plan to use Candlekeep in one of my campaign series. The idea of an "Anthology" of stories is fun, and reminds me of Tales From the Yawning Portal, with the adventures in it being able to be told as only stories.
Also, Third
we know you made a new book, but stop posting every time somebody makes a new adventure.
yay! this adventure sounds fun! yay!
Now go read the Wish spell.
Monkey paw: *curls finger*
I love that the djinni is ACTUALLY grateful - the hints indicate his reward is meant to be a true benefit instead of some kind of monkey's paw style "careful what you wish for" deal. Some DMs might want to swing it differently, but "gotcha" prizes can get tiresome.
I would use wish to get a better magical friend, such as a war dragon, or something better.
Lol, wut? This is a news post on a DnD company's site. A new official adventure being announced is definitely newsworthy. Why wouldn't you just not read the article, instead of taking the time to read it and make this comment?
I stand corrected. Now... how much does a ring of djinni summoning cost?...
My master plan. Phase one: Rescue the djinni!
Phase two: Take the wish and wish for 3 spell scrolls of hold monster.
Phase 3: Cast hold monster on the djinni.
Phase 4: Threaten it, until it gives a wish to every single party member.
Phase 4 1/2: Have the last party memeber wish for a scroll of imprisonment. Also make everyone else wish for money up to 25,000 GP.
Phase 5: Use that money to get 1 or 2 rings of djinni summoning.
Phase 6: Imprison the Djinni in whatever way you prefer!
Phase 7: Enjoy!!
it is just annoying how they scream about it. if i had my computer sound on it would sound like this: aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaiiiieeeeeaaaahhhhaaaahahhaaaaaaaiiiieeeeaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!!
This seems like something a sane DM wouldn't allow and if you threatened the Djinn it would probably twist your wish.
Yeah ok but isnt it a rather huge spoiler to write that
a. There is a djinn in the book
b. Yall get a wish as a reward
And "In order to gain access to Candlekeep library, one must present at the gates a unique tome not present within the library’s manifold archives".
I mean unique tomes are kind of hard to come by. Isnt the idea of a library to allow people to come there and read without some elitistic gatekeeper rule?

No no, let them find out the hard way
It's a lore thing. Candlekeep is established to do this.
In our world? Yes. In DND world? Absolutely not. It's about accumulating knowledge for use by the power elite. Give them something they want, and they'll share some of their lore with you. Note that you get access to the library (a temporary resource) in exchange for a (permanent) donation of a book.
