Species Details
The warchief Mhurren roused himself from his sleeping-furs and his women and pulled a short hauberk of heavy steel rings over his thick, well-muscled torso. He usually rose before most of his warriors, since he had a strong streak of human blood in him, and he found the daylight less bothersome than most of his tribe did. Among the Bloody Skulls, a warrior was judged by his strength, his fierceness, and his wits. Human ancestry was no blemish against a warrior—provided he was every bit as strong, enduring, and bloodthirsty as his full-blooded kin. Half-orcs who were weaker than their orc comrades didn’t last long among the Bloody Skulls or any other orc tribe for that matter. But it was often true that a bit of human blood gave a warrior just the right mix of cunning, ambition, and self-discipline to go far indeed, as Mhurren had. He was master of a tribe that could muster two thousand spears, and the strongest chief in Thar.
Whether united under the leadership of a mighty warlock or having fought to a standstill after years of conflict, orc and human communities, sometimes form alliances. When these alliances are sealed by marriages, half-orcs are born. Some half-orcs rise to become proud leaders of orc communities. Some venture into the world to prove their worth. Many of these become adventurers, achieving greatness for their mighty deeds.
Scarred and Strong
Half-orcs exhibit a blend of orcish and human characteristics, and their appearance varies widely. Grayish skin tones and prominent teeth are the most common shared elements among these folk.
Orcs regard battle scars as tokens of pride and ornamental scars as things of beauty. Other scars, though, mark an orc or half-orc as a former prisoner or a disgraced exile. Any half-orc who has lived among or near orcs has scars, whether they are marks of humiliation or of pride, recounting their past exploits and injuries.
The Mark of Gruumsh
The one-eyed god Gruumsh—lord of war and fury—created the first orcs, and even those orcs who turn away from his worship carry his blessings of might and endurance. The same is true of half-orcs. Some half-orcs hear the whispers of Gruumsh in their dreams, calling them to unleash the rage that simmers within them. Others feel Gruumsh’s exultation when they join in melee combat — and either exult along with him or shiver with fear and loathing.
Beyond the rage of Gruumsh, half-orcs feel emotion powerfully. Rage doesn’t just quicken their pulse, it makes their bodies burn. An insult stings like acid, and sadness saps their strength. But they laugh loudly and heartily, and simple pleasures — feasting, drinking, wrestling, drumming, and wild dancing — fill their hearts with joy. They tend to be short-tempered and sometimes sullen, more inclined to action than contemplation and to fighting than arguing. And when their hearts swell with love, they leap to perform acts of great kindness and compassion.
Half-Orc Names
Half-orcs usually have names appropriate to the culture in which they were raised. A half-orc who wants to fit in among humans might trade an orc name for a human name. Some half-orcs with human names decide to adopt a guttural orc name because they think it makes them more intimidating.
Male Orc Names: Dench, Feng, Gell, Henk, Holg, Imsh, Keth, Krusk, Mhurren, Ront, Shump, Thokk
Female Orc Names: Baggi, Emen, Engong, Kansif, Myev, Neega, Ovak, Ownka, Shautha, Sutha, Vola, Volen, Yevelda

actually they make better wizards
Green thru grey tones. My half orc is also half elf. I gave mine vitiligo, from peachy-elf tones into greys
Yes, I played a 'Death Metal Bard' named Grawl - he created a chaotic frenzy with raucous performances of riot-inducing rebellion songs instilling an anti-establishment blood-lust among his listeners and then led them into whatever fray he could create. For game play he was just a College of Eloquence... but with a bit of a flavor twist. So much fun to play.
Are half orcs any good as a fighter? I'm trying to make a tank softy, so I want strong fighting skills, but no rage.
We had a half-orc blood hunter in our party. He was terrifying, as he got his nourishment from sparring/fighting. So he almost killed our warlock... ._.
Gray green or Red
Mostly Orc part Drow Illusion sorcerer with trusty black cat familiar Sidhe (sid for short) here.
What about a Half orc with 2 classes
One class is Bloodhunter lvl 3
and the other class is Barbarian Lvl 17
Thoughts/Suggestions for a n00b (first campaign *ever* and I'm in my 40's) who wants to play a half-orc rogue. (For those who've played the Dragon Age series, think: Zevran (without the deathwish) + Isabella + chip-on-her-shoulder Lelianna [minus the musicianship].)
Thanks!
My brother is going to play a half orc fighter with like 17 str. in a campaign we’re starting, I wonder how that’ll go
Ok, hear me out! Warlock/ bard!
Made a Scout Rogue Half Orc, he had a movement speed of 40ft and my DM and I let me reflavor my weapon as gauntlets (Reskinned Rapier) dealing 1d8 bludgeoning damage. He was an intimidation expert and had insanely good stealth roles (Most of the time). He was a smaller Half Orc at around 5'10, he had charcoal grey skin, long wavy matted white hair, and piercing yellow eyes. He was physically built orc, and was the party's defector ideas man (He had an intelligence score of 16).
Breaking this stereotype of Brutish Slow Orc he used this to his advantage, letting his half Orc Heritage give him advantage on many bluffs and lies when confronted by using this idea that he would be immensely powerful, slow creature. Only to run 40 ft in an instant and easily knock the wind out of an opponent with two swift punches.
His stat block was (In Order of Highest-Lowest)
20 Dexterity
17 Charisma
16 Intelligence
14 Constitution
14 Wisdom
11 Strength
By the end he had been crafted new gauntlets that were magical and had the property of being able to hit magic attacks and bypass magic. How this worked is if he could match the damage of a spell he could fully destroy it, if he could get to half he could redirect it or make it deal an initial half damage. Against spells like Blink or Misty Step he could actually intercept teleportation (And the opponent would take as much damage as ft they intended to move) as the Gauntlets remained physical so teleporting through him would result in being face palmed.
Basically by the end of the campaign when we fought the BBEG (A boss who had a second hand who my party had seen a few times before and was keen on using teleportation) he was killed very quickly as he teleported nearly 60 feet right into the clutches of my Orc (55 damage), had his face crushed (1d8 + 9d6) and then gut Punched (1d8), as well as losing the grapple check (My Orc can use his Acrobatics to hold him down) the Party's Fighter than came up and hit him 4 times with advantage with a flaming Scythe (4d10 + 8d4) and he was killed in the first round of combat.
Sadly the BBEG had landed a crit Moon Beam, and another crit Warhammer attack that took my Orc out of the fight for a while until he was able to be healed eventually by the Cleric so he didn't participate much in that.
Idk why I wrote all this as he only had a bit to do with him being a half orc but I got so caught up in thinking about him I had to share his most epic moment in the campaign.
I think half orcs are good for any class, campaign, and player. They are EXTREMELY fun to play, because you can be brutal, destructive, and quick-tempered all you want!
They are amazing barbarians!!!
I made a half-orc ranger. His name is Gob. He has a pet frog named Waffles.
I have but I didn't stick with it. The idea of the character was basically a metalhead who only lived for violence. College of Swords is also a great subclass for this idea.
I want to be in a campaign with that man! He sounds like he's got his life together.
Check out the BomBARDed podcast, lots of cool half orc bard action
Very helpful x
my half orc druid is really strong
This is my favorite race by far. There's so much you can do with the character! So many ways to interpret personalities and such interesting social interactions- to me, it's perfect!
