Homebrew Myconids of the Underdark Species Details

Myconids are small size sentient humanoid creatures that protect their colonies of fungi and other myconids. These small mushroom folk wander around the Underdark spreading their colony's bounds. Myconids tend to be lawful good, sticking to their colonies and befriending travelers in the region. Myconids tend towards adventuring only to experience the worlds of the travelers they often see enter their domains, before eventually returning to their colony to assimilate with the structure upon death.

Myconids of the Underdark Traits

Myconids use their spores and little fungi friends to spread their colonies and defend themselves.

Ability Score Improvement

Your Wisdom score increases by 2 and your Dexterity score decreases by 1.

Language

You can speak, read, and write common and shroomish. You can use shroomish to speak with other sentient mushrooms.

Darkvision

You can see 120 feet in dim light as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can discern color in darkness.

Spawn Mycelia

As a myconid, you can use your spores to spawn tiny size mushroom-men to assist you in and out of combat. Twice a day, you can spend 10 minutes spawning 4 tiny mushroom like creatures. These mycelia appear as small mushrooms with stubby legs coming out of the bottom of their stalks with one hitpoint. Mycelia also have a movement speed of 10 feet and can choose to take the dash action to quickly scamper to their destination on their turn. Mycelia act on your initiative.

At 1st level, your mycelia can lure enemies to themselves. On your turn, you can forgo your action to have one of your mycelia distract an enemy creature. The creature must succeed a Wisdom saving throw equal to 8 plus your Proficiency bonus, plus your Wisdom modifier. If the target creature fails the saving throw, they must use their movement to get closer to the mycelia and their action to attack it if they are within range. This effect is broken if the target creature takes damage, the mycelia is killed, or if the target creature breaks line of sight with the mycelia. Creatures immune to the charmed effect are immune to this ability. Mycelia can also headbutt enemy creatures on their turn if they are within 5 feet of the target creature. To do this they must make an attack roll with an attack modifier of -2 to hit. On a successful hit the mycelia does 1 bludgeoning damage and falls prone. The mycelia cannot recover from the prone condition without assistance from another friendly creature or mycelia.

At 3rd level, your mycelia become strong enough to pick up and move small objects, as well as traverse their surroundings more easily. As an action, a mycelia can scoop up an object that weighs 2 pounds or less and carry it on top of their cap. Along with this feature, the mycelia's jump height increases to 5 feet and their movement speed increases to 15 feet.

At 5th level, your mycelia learn teamwork, now being able to form a mini colony. Your mycelia can now spend their turn to form a colony if all surviving mycelia occupy a space within 5 feet of each other. While in a colony they occupy the same space, their health increases to their sum health plus 1, and they can take the gang up and flee actions on their turn. The gang up action has the mycelia all jump on an enemy creature if they are within 5 feet of the target creature. The target creature must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw equal to 9 plus the number of mycelia in the colony or become encompassed by mushrooms. While encompassed by mushrooms, a creature has disadvantage on attack rolls against enemy creatures, and gains disadvantage on Dexterity saving throws. An encompassed creature can make a DC 10 Dexterity saving throw at the beginning of each of its turns to shake off the mushrooms. If the affected creature succeeds on their Dexterity saving throw, the mycelia colony breaks and each of the mycelia fall prone within 5 feet of the affected creature. The flee action has the mycelia disperse with a small cloud of spores. When fleeing, the mycelia gain a temporary +5 to their movement speed.

At 7th level your mycelia have evolved to the point where they can help spread your colony. Outside of combat, your mycelia can plant themselves into the ground to start spreading the spores and fungus of your colony. While in an area covered by fungus you can take the meld action. By performing the meld action, you can submerse your body into the fungi, dropping your speed to zero, allowing you to gain the benefits of the planted defense feature, and increasing your passive perception by 5.

By 9th level, your mycelia have greatly grown in numbers. When you plant your mushroom buddies, you now grow 6 instead of 4.

Planted Defense

When in danger you can plant yourself in place and absorb incoming damage. As an action, you can choose to plant yourself in place, reducing your speed to zero, but temporarily increasing you AC by 2. You must use your action to end this effect on your turn. You must finish one long rest before taking this action again.

Spread the Colony

Your purpose as a myconid is to spread your colony by planting fungus all over the material plane. You can take 10 minutes to implant yourself into the ground and create a fungus grove in a cave or well shaded area. While standing in this portion of your colony, you can take the meld action.

  • By performing the meld action, you can submerse your body into the fungi, dropping your speed to zero, allowing you to gain the benefits of the planted defense feature, and increasing your passive perception by 5.

Sun Sickness

As a humanoid-mushroom creature from the Underdark, you don't adjust to sunlight very well. While in direct sunlight, you grow lethargic and visibly dreary, letting out a yawn every once in a while. Additionally, for every 10 minutes you spend in direct sunlight, you must make a DC 10 Constitution saving throw. On a failed save, you gain one level of exhaustion. See the exhaustion status effect for the effects table for this condition.
