Creatures of your choice that you can see within range and that can hear you must make a Wisdom saving throw. A target automatically succeeds on this saving throw if it can't be charmed. On a failed save, a target is affected by this spell. Until the spell ends, you can use a bonus action on each of your turns to designate a direction that is horizontal to you.
Each affected target must use as much of its movement as possible to move in that direction on its next turn. It can take its action before it moves. After moving in this way, it can make another Wisdom saving throw to try to end the effect.
A target isn't compelled to move into an obviously deadly hazard, such as a fire or pit, but it will provoke opportunity attacks to move in the designated direction.
I sort of want to love this spell, I don't see it used much. Here are some possible uses I can think of.
What do you think about using this spell to ask the 15 creatures I can see to all go to the corner of the room? How many creatures can fit in one square? They are compelled to move there so they all squeeze into one space? They have disadvantage on attack rolls. Does this seem like a legitimate use? Place a number of creatures in the way of them so that you gain half cover from all the obstacles.
The Wizard pokes their head into the room and fireballs the people standing in the corner.
The martial characters we run everyone by them every other turn. Run through the gauntlet of martial characters. Next turn run back.
Crowd control. Have 5-6 characters just straight run out of sight behind total cover. (Poor man's wall of force. Or Bard's Wall of force.)
I do like the arcane gate idea, but only differently executed. Make the gate 500 feet away and then have the wizard stop concentrating on the spell, then they're likely far away.
A cleric could cast the gate spell. The fay wild may not be dangerous, but having them in there and not on your plane of existence might be a good way to deal with an enemy.
Dangerous terrain doesn't necessarily mean difficult terrain. You could send them through thick bushes and maybe they can't see you due to cover or other obstacles.
Get in the lake and start swimming...
Get creatures to approach you if they were attacking from a tactical advantage. Then the barbarian or paladin could cut into them.
Stand over there near the edge, of the cliff. The barbarian, fighter or telekinetically blessed caster pushes them off.
Place yourself near the summoned creature.
Are the people close to an ally with an aura? Send them away.
Have the minions stand aside so you can get to the BBEG.
Move the enemies away from the squishy caster at the back and go to the corner so you can be targeted with an AOE effect.
Run away opportunity attacks.
Some monsters just have much less optimal ranged attacks, so letting them use that instead of their primary melee attack should be a good ideal.
I wonder if go down the stairs is horizontal? I'd think this is ok.
Send guards from their position when they're not expecting it.
Combine this with meta magic adept and subtle spell so people don't think you did anything at all... They just go away.
Stand in a space that's too small for you. Is squeezing in a smaller spot considered dangerous?
I think this spell has a lot of opportunities for unique situations. I still like hypnotic pattern, slow, fear and other spells. I just think this one has some unique possibilities. What are your ideas for use?
This spell definitely competes with better spells like hypnotic pattern, but I think it's a lot better if you can't win initiative. Unlimited targets and no friendly fire; if the party is being swarmed by a bunch of melee enemies, this is a semi-good way to get the enemies away from you, and damage doesn't break it.
Thanks for the hot tip. I'm almost at level 4 spells :)
