You create a sound or an image of an object within range that lasts for the duration. The illusion also ends if you dismiss it as an action or cast this spell again.
If you create a sound, its volume can range from a whisper to a scream. It can be your voice, someone else's voice, a lion's roar, a beating of drums, or any other sound you choose. The sound continues unabated throughout the duration, or you can make discrete sounds at different times before the spell ends.
If you create an image of an object--such as a chair, muddy footprints, or a small chest--it must be no larger than a 5-foot cube. The image can't create sound, light, smell, or any other sensory effect. Physical interaction with the image reveals it to be an illusion, because things can pass through it.
If a creature uses its action to examine the sound or image, the creature can determine that it is an illusion with a successful Intelligence (Investigation) check against your spell save DC. If a creature discerns the illusion for what it is, the illusion becomes faint to the creature.

"The illusion also ends if you dismiss it as an action or cast this spell again."
I guess it would be up to the DM. I had a Kenku that used this and taught himself common because, he used his mental voice on a sock puppet ( like reading to oneself, but in Morgan Freeman's voice) to vocalize his mental voice back to him. Kenkus are inherently difficult to RP, giving it the capability to speak, just breaks the character.
Almost everyone I ask about this says "Minor illusion can not move it is in the description." but take one single minute look. Where in the text does it says this? If you pull up another source like reddit the plesse just look at the spell.
Quote Sage Advice: "Can an object created with minor illusion move? For example, a wall sliding down a corridor?
An illusory object created by minor illusion doesn’t move. Compare to spells like major image and mislead, which talk about moving."
I don't see the rules allowing you to move the illusion. You just create an image or sound in a spot. I think there is another spell that allows you to create a moving illusion.
Can you use this spell to hide? It technically blocks an enemy's view (unless they use an action to try and percieve the illusion as false). If the enemy you are hiding from is distracted by one of the tanky characters, you should be able to walk into the illusion without the enemy knowing you did it. Obviously, you have to be sneaky enough, but that's why you make a Stealth check. If you are allowed to simply duck behind a rock to hide, surely you can hide using an illusory object.
Outside of combat, you can create an illusion of a rock and duck inside of it. Creatures that aren't magically inclined won't suspect a thing (unless they are so thick and clumsy that they trip over the "rock").
I doubt the image can move. I imagine there are higher level illusion spells you’d have to use for this
I have also been wondering about these if anyone can provide some input
So what if I cast it through a familiar like a Raven and the make a flock of Raven fly around the enemy to distract them ?
Honestly i would call this : The Unkindness
Edit :
Even better if the Raven could use the Mimicry skills to make it seems like multiple crows are screaming
Though I guess I could be making the Ravens illusions myself and just have the familiar use Mimicry separately...
A bit late to the conversation but I would argue yes, however if it is in combat the echolocation creature would make an investigation at the start of its turn, becuase the use of echolocation on the object is examining it, albeit passively maybe if they used the action to examine they'd have advantage. Butthays my opinion. As each click is recreating the soundscape from a new perspective.
Use this in an ambush situation to give your team instructions. A poor man’s Message.
Use in a crowded bar to start a fight by insulting people.
All the questions asking about making images that are duplicates of people or creatures: The spell specifies images must be objects, so no.
All the questions involving the image having any motion, the spell does not mention motion, the sage advice specifies no motion, and the examples are all static, so no.
All the questions involving bat echolocation, the bat's sonar pulses are 3x higher than the range of human hearing (or Elven, Dwarven etc unless their ears and brains are configured like a bat) so the ability for this spell to mimic the sound is questionable from the start. Would PCs understand sonar technology? And if they did, using this cantrip to fool it is like trying to use a pocket radio transmitter to fool the radar on a squadron of fighter jets.
That said, there are bat repellent devices that emit a steady high frequency whine that normal bats find annoying. So if you really want to spend an action on being annoying to normal bats, go for it I suppose :)
Bottom line, it's a cantrip, so settle down Francis.
Fun Fact: When you have Illusory Reality, you can use this spell to create material components for other spells that take less than a minute to cast.
Such as a tuning fork for whatever plane you need to plane-shift to.
Note:
It doesn't say it can move. There is silent image for that.
I think the simple answer to this discussion is that it's MAGIC. Of course, the illusion would work on bats. A bat has an intelligence of 2. And even if the bat couldn't "see" the illusion, so what? Unless it's an illusion of a door to stop the bats, what difference would it make if the bat flew through the illusion. Or are you planning to carry around a cage of bats to check for illusion spells?
Hi all,
Could I cast a Minor Illusion through a closed window (caster is able to see through the glass) ?
Spell has no verbal component :)
Can i use it to have my own jazz trompets chorus like a real ingame bso? I mean, making an entrance, a first impresion, with jazzz music sounding from nowhere, its SO cool
As it says object, not creature, could i still make an object with animated effects, say like a flickering candle (that would also not emit light as it's only an image?) or a running metronome (without the tik tok), or is it "still life" like a bowl of fruit only?
"The image can't create sound, light, smell, or any other sensory effect." but do what you want just have fun.
